Cortland Jerome Brown (Baba) passed peacefully January 26, 2021 at his home in the Mountainview Residence in Georgetown, Ontario. He joins his wife Joan Brown who passed July 9th 2020 and is survived by daughters Carol Nicholas (husband Savian), and Anne Brown, and son Scott Brown (wife Rosalind), and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Born and raised in Ste. Jean/Iberville, Quebec, descending from loyalists on both the Brown and Miller side of his family, he was educated in Montreal West and McGill before joining the Canadian Forces during WW2. After university, he took a role at Imperial Tobacco and worked as an executive until he retired in his late fifties.
He met his wife Joan while vacationing in Massachusetts and together built a life in the Montreal area. They shared a great adventure together for over 65 years, raising a family they were proud of, and demonstrating their values and care for others. They moved several times within Quebec but settled in Montreal West and became fixtures in the community.
Their greatest pride was Manitou, their year-round cottage and ultimately their home, which they built over several decades. He showed his love for his family and friends by providing them with a comfortable place of rest and reflection – a sanctuary. You could find him in his sugar shack during maple syrup season testing his newly invented electronic concentration meter, or in the orchard grafting his new high oxidant fruit trees. He had a thirst for continually learning. Just last year he enjoyed sunning on the dock, swimming and boating.
He enjoyed fishing trips with his buddy Daddy George, Nick and his son Scott, although there was very little fishing done by Daddy George and Baba, and lots of time in the cabin enjoying cigars and celebratory raising of glasses. The annual oyster party fundraiser at the town hall was a must with much laughter.
Baba was committed to the community. President of the Montreal West Rotary Club, he welcomed many international students into his home and travelled globally, building relationships and long term friends. While living in Florida during winters, he served in the Canadian Snow Birds Association, was president of his local condo association, and tutored students at local schools. For decades he championed annual water testing around Lake Manitou, which ensured pure drinking water to this day. An avid sailor, tennis player, and golfer, he loved social events. During his presidency of the local golf club he encouraged new members and young players.
A memorial will hopefully be held at Manitou in the summer once Covid abates. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome for the Montreal General Hospital.
The end of an era, we will miss this loving father and friend, Baba.
