Obituary
Clarence Devoe
Alder Point
It is with great sadness we announce the death of Clarence Vincent Devoe, 97, of Alder Point, who passed away at home Friday, August 20, 2021.
Born in Alder Point on April 29, 1924, Clarence was the son of the late Frederick and Henrietta (Doucette) Devoe of Alder Point. He was a member of St. Anne Parish, Alder Point.
Clarence was a man of many talents. In his younger years he fished, did carpentry work (built his own home), and drove a truck. He found his true calling as an automotive mechanic, operating his own business for 31 years. He loved camping, boating, playing cards, telling jokes and stories, particularly stories of his adventures and travels while “hoboing”, “catching” a train and going to the Annapolis Valley to pick apples at the age of 13. Luck was always with him, and so the story goes, he left as a hobo and came back from the Valley as a paying passenger on the train, in a new suit, with a carton of cigarettes and cash in his pocket to buy a new car.
Clarence will be sadly missed by his family and friends, who frequently visited. He is survived by his sons, Chris (Lois), Sydney, Dan, Sydney Mines, Ronnie (at home, Alder Point), Kevin (Corrine), Alder Point, Tim (Heather Ann), Halifax, and his daughters, Nancy (Little Bras D’or) and Susan, (David) Harrietha, Georges River. He will also be greatly missed by his much-loved grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Clarence is also survived by his brother Tom (Rita), Ontario.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife Gwen (Laffin), by sisters Mary Fry, Mary Eva Ough, Bernetta Doyle, Elsie Marsh, Della Gaskell, Margaret Chapman and Lucy Sebina MacDonald, Martha Edith; and brothers Russell, William, Hubert, Ernest, Elmer, Charles, and John Albert.
We want to thank our brother Ronnie, for the comfort and care he provided to Dad prior to his passing.
There will be no visitation. At Dad’s request, his body has been donated to science; cremation will take place at a later date. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, Wednesday, August 25th, 2021 at 10:30 am. Covid 19 restrictions will be in place.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of ones’ choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
