James Christopher David Mills, “Chris”, age 70, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2021 at Boissevain Health Center. His celebration of life will be announced and held at a later date.
Chris was born in Hartney, Manitoba, November 2, 1950 to James S. and Marie K. Mills. Chris grew up on the family farm three miles east of Hartney and enjoyed farm life and the outdoors. He met the love of his life, Verla, while in school and they were married in Hartney on April 17, 1971. They enjoyed 50 years together farming, running their business and raising their children. He is survived by his wife, Verla Mills, his children Penny (Mark) Hunt, Duane (Dorthea) and Shawna (Darryle) Ducharme. He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Nicholas, Melissa (Rylan Rommelaere), Kaitlyn (Nathan Doig), Chelsey, Christopher, and Owen. He leaves behind his siblings Kathy (Trevor) Luten, Fred (Michelle), Terry (Heather), Peggy (David) Thomas, Tim (Joan), Colleen (Ed) Piper, and his brother-in-law Blaine Fallis along with many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents James S. Mills, Marie K. Mills, nephew James (Jimmy) Thomas and his sister-in-law, Helen Fallis.
Chris started his career building roads and working for the Manitoba Highways Department. He left Highways to work at Twin Motors in The Pas and completed his automotive mechanic certification. He then moved back home to the family farm at Hartney in 1976 to work for Tweeds Farm Equipment in Medora where he challenged his Red Seal Heavy Duty Mechanic Certification. He worked for Tweeds for ten years. Chris took a mechanics position with Co-op Implements in Hartney so he could be closer to home. When Co-op Implements was closing in 1996, Chris started his own business, Mills Farm Equipment. He operated Mills Farm Equipment up until his passing. Working with equipment was a passion and always kept him busy. Farming was in his nature and passed down from his father. He always enjoyed passing on his knowledge to any farmer who needed assistance and was there to give advice and to have a chat. He loved nothing better than to spend his time hunting and fishing. Chris enjoyed his annual elk and moose hunting trip to Northern Alberta with his son, Duane and sister Colleen. This past year they were joined by his grandson, Christopher and three generations of Mills men enjoyed their time together. Chris was a member of the Hartney Elks, the Hartney Fire Department, and was an elected RM of Grassland Councillor. Chris believed in contributing to his community and enjoyed talking politics. He freely shared his political opinion with anyone who dropped in for coffee. Chris earned his pilots license and was a member of the Hartney Flying Club. Chris enjoyed stock car racing for Twin Motors. He was an avid racer, driving car number #99 and #33. Chris was also very involved with Air Cadets Squadron #263 out of Melita, MB. If friends and family so desire, memorial donations can be made in Chris’s name to any local organization.
