Peacefully, in the company of family, Catherine Jean (Cathy) Little passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Beloved wife and best friend of Dave, cherished mother of Sarah (Dave), doting and proud “Mama” of Wesley, Sophie and Ethan, caring aunt of Caitlin (Nolan) and Rachel (Dan) Costello, Leonard and Susan Little. Survived by sisters Janet and Susan Costello, and brother Jim (Irene). Predeceased by brother in law Peter (Linda) Little.
Born and raised in Toronto, Cathy moved to Burlington in 1973 beginning a long career in nursing both in hospital and the community. In the late 1980’s she found her true calling teaching Nursing at Mohawk College. At Mohawk she established strong friendships with many of her colleagues ultimately forming the “Salmon Sisters” who have been so supportive during her year-long battle.
Cathy was a great sports Mom supporting Sarah in synchronized swimming and softball. She also supported Dave in his efforts to golf and play ball. Along the way she decided she wanted to play games as well and became a very capable tennis and pickleball player and golfer. She even tried her hand at Slo-Pitch where the highlight of the night quickly became post game Karaoke at the Sherwood Inn!
Since retiring in 2010 Cathy has been an active volunteer in the Appleby Women’s Probus Club, the Roseland Club and the Burlington Performing Art Centre. Golf, pickleball, book clubs, bridge, walking – all were activities she enjoyed not just for themselves but more for the opportunity to socialize. Cathy and Dave were fortunate to be able to travel extensively in later years and have great memories of exciting new places seen and people from around the world that they met.
But when all is said and done, Cathy got the greatest joy being with family. Nothing compared to having the grandkids over for a sleepover, attending their soccer, football and hockey games, picking them up from school or making gingerbread houses at Christmas. Family dinners on special occasions were events to be treasured and not missed. Cathy will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.
The family would like to thank the Oncology team at Joseph Brant Hospital for all their efforts throughout Cathy’s battle. Special thanks to the staff at Carpenter Hospice for the capable and compassionate care they provided during Cathy’s final days. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Carpenter Hospice in Cathy’s memory would be sincerely appreciated.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stop light north of the QEW) on Friday, November 19th 2021 from 3-5 and 7-9. Please RSVP for contact tracing. There are no capacity restrictions for the visitation, however proof of full vaccination is required to attend. A private service will take place at a later date.
