Catherine Dorothy (Callaghan) von Kintzel -Date of birth, April 11, 1965, passed away the morning of December 17, 2020 at the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital (LFMH) in Tatamagouche with her family by her side. Daughter of Barbara (Gallant) Callaghan of Charlottetown and Tatamagouche, and the late Norbert Callaghan. Cathy was the proud wife of Sven von Kintzel, and mother to grown children Rebecca von Kintzel and Yorke von Kintzel. She is also survived by her mother-in-law Ellen von Kintzel, Middleton, Colchester County, N.S.; sister-in-law Jennifer (Kevin) Dickie, Windsor, N.S.; brother-in-law Mark (Heather) von Kintzel, Belnan, N.S.; nieces Keira, Ava, Isabelle and Sophia, and nephew, Callum; best friends Shunda MacInnis and Sherry Martell, plus many aunts and cousins in the Maritimes, Ontario and Germany. Along with her father, she was predeceased by her father-in-law, Hugo von Kintzel. Born in Ontario but raised in Charlottetown, PEI; Cathy adopted Nova Scotia as her permanent home in 1984. Up until recent years, Cathy was a special events and culture coordinator for the Town of Truro, which she considered her dream job. She was also a long-time journalist, having worked with the Chronicle Herald, the Truro Daily News and the Amherst Daily News. Cathy was a life-long volunteer who enjoyed planning and being part of community activities personally and through her work. Although her illness resulted in her having to step back from work and many activities, her recent involvements included being president of the North Shore Bavarian Society’s Tatamagouche Oktoberfest; being secretary of the Tatamagouche and Area Minor Hockey Association; and being a past co-chair of the new Tatamagouche School Enhancement Committee. Cathy loved to sing and was a proud member of the West Branch Community Singers with whom she sang and played the spoons. She also fulfilled a long-time goal of learning to curl in the last few years of her life, and with her team of husband Sven, teammates Brenda and Steve Forbes, won the North Shore Curling Club championship in 2018 and was on the top team for the season in both 2019 and 2020. Cathy was a talented individual who succeeded at anything she was determined to accomplish. In 2015, Cathy was one of three “inspiring” women recognized for their community involvement during an International Women’s Day Celebration of Women, Truro. Cathy was always looking for new ways to be creative and expressive. She was kind, joyful, funny, and had a love of life. Cathy enjoyed social gatherings and could captivate a crowd. Cathy and the family would like to thank all of their friends for their continuous support. The drives to appointments, delicious meals, and supportive telephone calls, emails, visits, texts and flowers throughout her journey with a lengthy illness was always appreciated. You are too numerous to mention by name, but very much loved for your kindness. Thank you also to her medical team, wonderful nurses, and supportive staff at LFMH. Family flowers only. In lieu of donations, please consider giving blood, if you are able. Visitations in memory of Cathy will be held on Thursday, August 12, 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday, August 13, 5 to 8 p.m. in Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche (902-657-3288).
