CARPICK, Victor
May 24, 1931 — October 19, 2021
Victor passed away peacefully on October 19, 2021, at Hawthorn Park Retirement Residence in Kelowna, BC, at the age of 90.
Victor was born May 24, 1931 (Victoria Day, an inspiration for his name), in The Pas, MB. Graduating as Valedictorian from The Pas Collegiate in 1949, Victor earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Manitoba in 1952. He was a longtime resident of Winnipeg MB, Mississauga ON, and Kelowna BC, with other stops along the way.
Victor had a long career with The Great-West Life Assurance Company in Winnipeg MB and Toronto ON, retiring in 1993. He was well-respected by colleagues and employees alike for his intelligence, professionalism, modesty, and way with people. Always giving, he loved, protected, and nurtured his family, and was known for his generosity, kindness, and support of his many other relatives and friends. He had an extraordinarily close and loving 64-year-long marriage with his beloved wife, Patricia. With her, he raised four children, and was “Grandpa” to six. He was a seasoned traveller and lover of the outdoors, who was at home everywhere including bush camps and remote lakes; golf courses and curling rinks; gardens, workbenches, and kitchens; and 747s, cruise ships, and skyscrapers. Friends, family, and co-workers will remember his sense of humour and personal warmth; it was not unusual to hear him described as “the nicest man I’ve ever met”.
In his later years, to the very end, he endured Alzheimer’s with good humour and grace (as all who cared for him attest). He benefitted greatly from Patricia’s devoted care at his side during those challenging years. The family extends a warm thank-you to all the extraordinary staff and volunteers at the facilities that took care of Victor over these last few years, especially during the challenges of the pandemic.
Victor will live in the hearts of Patricia (née Warner), his wife; their children Jim (Elizabeth Yip), Bruce (Irene), Andrea, and Robert (Carlos Chan); grandchildren Ian, Megan, Jasmine, Sam, Daniella, and Amy; his sister Helen Wardley of Burlington, ON; sisters-in-law Lynne Murphy of Toronto, ON, Peg Lidster of Kelowna, BC, and Eva Carpick of The Pas, MB; and many extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents, Conrad & Ann (née Sawchuk); as well as his brothers and sisters, Irene Van Buren, Phillip, William, Jack, Todd, and Lawrence.
Interment and a celebration of Victor’s life will take place at a date and location in 2022; details will be announced later.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any tribute gifts be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or plant a tree in his memory with A Living Tribute.
