Obituary of Carolyn Ann Barkhouse
Barkhouse, Carolyn Ann- Riverton/Halifax
It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Carolyn Ann Barkhouse on Monday, October 4, 2021, as the result of a tragic automobile accident in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia.
Carolyn was born in New Glasgow and grew up in Riverton, Pictou County. She was the daughter of the late John and Betty Barkhouse.
Carolyn is survived by her partner Bobby Blackler; brothers Craig and Bradley, Riverton; uncles Glenn (Betty), Caribou Island; Sam, Westville; Teddy (Helen), Sheet Harbour; aunts Heather, Hopewell; Doris, New Glasgow; Barb, Granton; Doreen, Port Dufferin, Jean Behie, Sheet Harbour; and Catherine, Lower Sackville.
Besides her parents Carolyn was predeceased by various other aunts and uncles.
Carolyn attended Dr. W.A. Macleod school in Riverton and then West Pictou District High School in Lyons Brook. Following graduation from High School, Carolyn attended St. Mary’s University in Halifax, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce. Growing up in Riverton, Carolyn was actively involved in 4-H, Highland Dancing, martial arts and other school sports. She also spent a summer with the CKEC Radio Station mobile van throughout Pictou County promoting the radio station and all the special summer events in Pictou County. She played basketball while attending West Pictou District High. Carolyn also taught Sunday School for 17 years at First Presbyterian Church in Hopewell.
While in Halifax, in 1988, she entered a beauty pageant and won the title of Miss Halifax. She then went on to win the title of Miss Nova Scotia. This achievement qualified her to participate in the Miss Canada 1988 pageant in Toronto, where she was a top 8 finalist.
Carolyn was an enthusiastic and committed volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and baby cuddling at the IWK Children’s Hospital in Halifax. While in Halifax she enjoyed a career in sales management and working in the food and beverage industry as a server.
She had a very special bond with her mother, who was clearly her best friend and supporter, cheering her on in all her activities. They were great travel companions as well and enjoyed trips together to Montreal, Nashville, Memphis, Florida, New York and Las Vegas.
Visitation will be held on Saturday October 9, 2021 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 2 pm with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Burial will be in the Hopewell Cemetery.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions MASKS ARE MANDATORY and PROOF OF VACCINATION is required to attend the visitation and or funeral service.
“For her day had come to fly off to heaven and visit our Mom and Dad in a happy haven. She left us all without a goodbye kiss. She was the kind of girl, The One we will dearly miss.”
