Carol passed away peacefully on January 2, 2021 at the age of 73. Mom, Nana, Daughter, Sister, Mentor, Transplant Advocate, Traveler and Educator.
Carol will be deeply missed by her children Daniel (Julie), Chad and Christie Weir. She will be lovingly remembered by her five grandchildren, Avery, Jayde, Katelyn, Carter and Xavier.
Carol is survived by her parents Lorne and Rita Dubeau and brothers and sisters David (Georgina), Theresa (Stewart) Allan, Steven, Raymond, Michelle (Patrick) Murphy and Richard (Laureen), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Carol is predeceased by her siblings Jacqueline and Ricky Dubeau, sister-in-law Marlene Dubeau, her best friend Chris Visconti, her close friend Brian Thrift and a few fellow transplant recipient friends.
Carol was born in Toronto on February 2nd, 1947. The eldest of nine children, Carol was very active in the lives of her siblings.
Carol received her BA in Geography with a Minor in Physical Education from Laurentian University. Teaching was her passion and she proudly worked as an elementary school teacher with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board until she moved into an administrative role as a Principal in 1994.
Carol loved to travel and went on many great adventures spending time teaching in both Australia and China. After her retirement in 2006, Carol travelled to China to act as a principal at Boren Sino-Canadian School in Jiangmen. While working abroad, Carol became ill and returned to Canada in March 2007. She was diagnosed with a rare form of pneumonia which resulted in her receiving a double lung transplant in June 2009.
Carol took her gift of health and time very seriously and truly paid it forward. She worked with the Trillium Gift of Life Network by helping to increase awareness of organ and tissue donation. She was instrumental in organizing the very first Transplant Trot Run/Walk in Waterloo and was the Event Director for 4 years. Carol was also active with the Canadian Transplant Association for several years and was a key member of the organizing committee for the 2016 CTA Transplant Games held in Toronto.
Not always a volunteer, Carol participated in both the Canadian and the World Transplant Games as an athlete, medaling at both, most notably a bronze medal at the World Games in Durban, South Africa in 2013. She also took up dragon boating, competing with Team Transplant, a team of transplant recipients, living donors and medical professionals based out of Toronto.
Carol was very involved with her parish at St. Louis Catholic Church. She volunteered every Sunday and participated in various church activities including arranging flowers, organizing rosary sessions and was the recording secretary for the CWL.
Carol was an active member of the Kitchener-Sandhill Probus Club and served as President for two years.
Most importantly, Carol enjoyed spending time with family and friends and cherished each and every relationship she made.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Johnathan Langridge for his endless support of Carol and to the team on Grand River Terrace 3, Palliative Care at Freeport who provided exceptional care, compassion and comfort to both Carol and our family over the last several weeks. Another big thank you to ALL of the health care professionals who have worked tirelessly in their support of Carol throughout the years.
In lieu of cards and flowers, donations to the Canadian Transplant Association would be appreciated.
