Obituary
SCOTT, Calvin Royden
July 16, 1944 – November 29, 2021
Calvin passed away on Monday, November 29, 2021 at the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge at the age of 77, after a sudden diagnosis and brief battle with cancer.
Married for 43 years to loving wife Aurelie (nee Fox) until her passing in 2016, Calvin is survived by and will be deeply missed by his children Kyla Bruce (Robert) and Mark Scott (Lisa Salter). The adored “Papa” of Levi, Lincoln & Kayden Scott, Calvin was also a special grandfather figure to Tanner Hoffman. The son of the late Harry and Ruby (nee Barnes) Scott, Calvin was brother to Thelma Cannon (the late Jim), Connie Foote, Wendy Ash (Dale), Doug Scott (Linda) and the late Michael Scott. Calvin will be dearly remembered by his siblings and many nieces and nephews, extended family and close friends.
Born in Gravenhurst, Calvin grew up in Caledon East where he played on the local hockey team and volunteered with the fire department. After attending high school in Orangeville, Calvin worked as a butcher in several different grocery stores in the Caledon, Orangeville and Toronto areas. He would later stay with his grandparents William and Clara Barnes on the Narrows Rd. in Gravenhurst, and work as a driver for Brown’s Beverages delivering pop to Base Borden and many summer camps and resorts in the Muskoka area.
In the early 1970’s, Calvin married Aurelie and they bought a new home together on Doe Lake Rd. near Barkway, where they would live for the next 40 years. Calvin began working at the Alcan Wire & Cable plant in Bracebridge, which became a 30+ year career as a wire extruder. After retiring when the plant closed, Calvin then became a skate sharpener at the Gravenhurst & Bracebridge arenas for several years.
Calvin and Aurelie had a great passion for travel, and especially cruising such destinations as Alaska, the Mediterranean and Caribbean with close friends. Calvin was fortunate to be able take one last cruise in early 2019 just before Covid started, travelling out of Puerto Rico with his daughter and one sister.
Calvin enjoyed fishing, golfing, spending time at the family farm in Harcourt and then the cottage on Loon Lake in west Gravenhurst and getting together with friends and family to play cards, games and tell jokes. Calvin always had vegetable gardens that he tended, and he loved to bbq, bake and try new recipes. In retirement, he became an avid shuffleboard player, not only playing but helping set-up for the weekly games and monthly tournaments at the Gravenhurst Seniors Centre.
In keeping with Calvin’s wishes, cremation has taken place. An informal celebration of life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 302 in Gravenhurst on Tuesday, December 14th, 2021 from 2pm – 6pm for those wishing to drop in and share their memories and offer condolences. His ashes will be interred at Mickle Memorial Cemetery in the spring with a family gathering.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations made to the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital would be appreciated. Messages of condolence can be left for the family at www.cavillfuneralhome.com
