Mary Jane (Strangemore) Burt was born in Ireland Bight, on June 26, 1924, one of the eight children born to Esau and Dorcas (Powell) Strangemore. She was raised in Ireland Bight, moving to St. Anthony in 1948. Here she met her life companion William (Bill) Burt. They were married on January 16, 1952 .The two of them began their life career with the International Grenfell Association and Grenfell Regional Health Services. Mary Jane and Bill were an inseparable team who spent 16 years as the caretakers of Grenfell House, before moving on to careers within the hospital. Mary Jane was an active, hardworking woman who always had time for a bit of fun and a laugh and she was well known for speaking her mind She and Bill did not have any children of their own but were surrogate parents to their many nieces and nephews. She was passionately devoted to her work with the Grenfell Association and her family . She was a good friend to all who came to know her, enjoyed company, a cup of tea and a story or two. Her health began to fail in the last number of months and she passed peacefully away on December 15th . She is survived by two brothers, Job (Elizabeth) and Norman (Myra), her loved nieces and nephews as well as sisters-in law Ethel, Dora, Florence (Paul), Vera and Violet and her special niece Gail Hancock (Phil), as well as many, many close and dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband Bill, parents Esau and Dorcas, sisters Blanche and Lucinda and brothers Ralph, Jeremiah and Clifford. She will be sadly missed. Funeral service to take place from the St. Anthony United Church on Friday, December 17, 2021 at 10:00 am with Rev. John McGonigle officiating. Interment to follow.
