Betty Maxine Price
March 8th, 1932- January 02, 2021
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Betty Maxine Price, resident of Tillsonburg, Ontario, at the age of 88 years on January 2nd, 2021. Betty passed away peacefully at home with her son Ken and her beloved dog Bella by her side after a short, but rapid decline in her health over the past few months. Betty had the opportunity to say goodbye to her closest relatives via virtual social media in her last hours, which helped her bring closure to her wonderful time here on earth. Betty was born on March 08, 1932, the third of eleven children to her parents Richard and Pearl Downing of Aroostook , New Brunswick. She also had four half brothers and one half sister from her father’s previous marriage. Growing up during the Great Depression of the 1930’s was a struggle for all, but especially for the Downing family in rural New Brunswick. Typical of all family members, their work ethic and perseverance carried them through life’s many challenges with great success. Along with her siblings, both younger and older, Betty attended school in Aroostook until her graduation in 1949. During her high school years and after graduation, she worked at the Aroostook Valley Golf and Country Club, York’s Dining Room and Cabins and the Gains’ Store in Aroostook. She had fond memories of her experiences at these locales. Like a lot of Maritimers, Betty hit the road and moved to Toronto in 1950. While there she met and married her first husband, the late Claude Burpee Belyea, in 1951. She worked at various businesses such as a stock brokerage firm on Bay Street, Simpsons, International Surveys, and the Ladies Auxiliary Foundation in the Textile industry, while at the same time raising her four children. In 1970 Betty met her second husband, the late George S. Price. It was a match made in heaven. They were married on June 01/1972 and spent the next 48 years together until George’s passing in July 2020. They moved to Tillsonburg, Ontario in September of 1974 and never looked back. Like all relationships, they had their fair share of ups and downs, but the love between them was never shaken and they supported each other through his fight with cancer and her fight with dementia in their last years. After moving to Tillsonburg, Betty worked for B.F. Johnson Auto Electric as a bookkeeper and then for Community Living as a caregiver in the group homes for the intellectually challenged. This was her dream job and she absolutely loved her 25 years working with those less fortunate than ourselves. For those who knew Betty, she will be remembered for her many quality traits such as her generosity, courage, kindness, friendliness, respect, empathy and compassion for others and her overall charitable nature where she would go without to ensure that others would not be without. Betty was predeceased by her Grandparents Ernest and Jennie Durost, her parents Richard and Pearl Downing, her brother Richard (Dick) Downing, her sisters Marjorie Morton, Anne Waugh and Norma Sherwood, her first husband Claude Belyea, her daughter Anne Marie Belyea, stepson George Price and her late husband George S. Price. Left to mourn her passing are her son Ken Belyea, wife Lori and grandchildren Glenn Belyea and Carol-Lynn Belyea-Belliveau, son Randy Belyea, wife Jeannie and grandchildren Justin and Christine Belyea, son Timothy Belyea, grandchildren Jason Belyea and Shayne Belyea, Step daughter Lorraine Glowienka and husband Ric, stepson Joe Price and wife Linda, Nancy Ouellette and Brenda Crozier, her sisters Alma Downing, Lois WalkerGillin, Nina Crooks and Husband Alf, Connie Scott and husband Larry, brothers Jim Downing, Gerald Downing and wife Carol, sister-in-laws’ Fran Valois and Gloria Maluga as well as her great grandchildren and many, many nieces and nephews. Betty was admired by all who made her acquaintance. In fact, she was greatly admired. She was not just admired by her family, but others too. Some of her admirers were close acquaintances, others strangers; but all held her in high regard. She was a mother through and through. Because she was totally in love with her family, she was always thoroughly prepared to show her love by giving all, asking little, and accepting less. She will be dearly missed and she has left the world a better place than when she entered it 88 short years ago. The family would like to extend our gratitude to the awesome professional and dedicated team of medical personnel who helped make her last few months as peaceful and comfortable as was possible. Thank you to the Community Care Coordinator, Care Partner Nurses, Care Partner PSW’s, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, the VON Day Program Staff and Dr. Dockx as well as all the staff at Ostrander’s Funeral Home. You all made a difference. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial service in Betty’s memory will take place at a later date. Memorial donations to The Alzheimer’s Society, Oxford Branch, Woodstock, Ontario may be made by contacting Ostrander’s Funeral Home Limited, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519-842-5221) who have been entrusted by the Price family. Friends and relatives are invited to show their support by sending special heartfelt tributes, and hugs from home in memory of Betty to www.ostrandersfuneralhome.com.
