Betty-Jane McLeod
July 10, 1927 – March 12, 2021
Betty-Jane (Carlson) McLeod passed away on March 12, 2021 in Castleview Care Centre in Castlegar BC at the age of 93.
Betty-Jane was a true Castlegar pioneer, living in the area for more than 90 years. She arrived here in 1929 when the family returned to Castlegar from San Francisco, California.
She started her education in a one-room school on the highway in what was later called Kinnaird and finished it by attending Normal School in Victoria, BC. Betty taught school in the Castlegar area for several years. She was a lifelong reader who passed on her love of books to her children.
Betty married Frank McLeod in 1953 and they had four children. She was devoted to her family, spending her life providing loving support to her children and grandchildren. Her great grandchildren continue to wear beautiful sweaters, mittens and socks that Betty knit.
Betty and Frank spent many years square dancing and Betty made herself wonderful dance dresses. She was the editor of a local square-dancing magazine.
She was an amazing keeper of “family lore” and was the glue that kept the expanding number of family connections in touch. She had adored her father and kept his memory vividly alive in the wonderful tales which she told about him.
Her keen intelligence, sense of humor and exceptional memory made her a wonderful storyteller, writer, and illustrator.
Betty was an avid gardener and had a love for the outdoors. She spent hours in her vegetable garden and caring for her beautiful flowers. She had a passion for cats and was never without one or two feline friends.
Betty was predeceased by her father Andrew Carlson in 1942, her mother Myrtle (Killough) Carlson in 1991 and her husband Frank in 1985.
She will be forever remembered and cherished by her sister Molly (Bruce) Spencer and her children Glada McIntyre, Cindy (Frank) Fodor, Sarah (Wayne) Fry and John McLeod. Grandchildren Amber, Kelly, Haley, Karen, Jillian, Alyson, and Jessica. Great grandchildren Jasmine, Zoey, Jack, Nova, Emerson, Sawyer, Marco, Eva, Isla and Romeo.
The family would like to thank the staff of Castlegar Care Centre for the wonderful care they provided Betty-Jane over the past two years. . We would also like to thank Janet and staff at Castlegar Funeral Chapel.
There will be a celebration of life sometime in the future.
