December 24, 1927 – July 8, 2021
After a life well lived, it is with profound sadness that the family of Bertha Frost announce her passing on July 8, 2021. We were blessed to have had her on this earth for 93 years. A lifelong resident of Thunder Bay, she was the last surviving member of the William and Caroline Gillies (Feaver) family.
Mom dedicated her life to raising her children and making her house a home, for her own children as well as many others who were in need. She loved children and the bright light in her eyes at the site of her grandchildren and great grandchildren was undeniable. She loved to bake and always had more than one cookie jar filled with cookies, shortbread being her specialty. She loved gardening and never missed watching a sporting event on television, curling, hockey, wrestling and baseball being her favourites.
She began working outside of the home in 1964 operating the concessions at the newly built Port Arthur Arena and Grandview Arena and subsequently worked at various retail outlets. She will be remembered as being extremely resilient, hard working, feisty, fiercely protective of her family, witty and having a great sense of humour.
She was the beloved mother of Lillian Esarik (late Bill), Alexander/Sandy (Karen), Howard (Jen), Rob (Susan), Lori-Anne (Jonas) Perala in Thunder Bay and Linda (Rob) Rutledge, late Gordon (Lise), Lloyd (Jaye), and Gerald, in Sault Ste. Marie, along with 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She had a very special relationship with her dear friend of over seventy years Lila Love Siczkar.
She was predeceased by parents William and Caroline, husband George Edward, son Gordon William, sisters Marguerite Gillies and Dorothy Thiessen and brothers William, Gordon, Lloyd and her niece Gail Herchak.
The family would like to thank Vickie Love and all of the kind, caring, compassionate dedicated staff at Pioneer Ridge for the incredible care provided to mom. Each and every one of you were special to her. Additional thanks to Bayshore staff for their care that allowed mom to remain in her home for an extended period of time. Through all of your efforts, mom’s life was extended and enriched allowing her to enjoy the last years of her life and spend precious time with her family. Thank you to mom’s wonderful neighbours, Lesly Kapush and Bob and Michele Love for your support to mom over the years.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please feel free to send donations to The Canadian Hearing Society, 130 Queen Street, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario P6A1A5, Pioneer Ridge or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com
