It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother Beppina Rassat (nee Giuseppina Battigelli). On April 14, 2021 at the age of 93 at Pioneer Ridge. Beppina was born on November 4, 1927 in SanTommaso, province of Udine Italy. She immigrated to Canada in 1957 to be with her oldest sister Anna Yoller. She met Alfredo Rassat at the Finlandia Club while out with her best friend Aurelia. A few months later Alfredo proposed and they married in September 1960.
Beppina started working at the Prince Arthur Hotel in 1958 as a dishwasher until she learned the English language then she began her cooking career. Her two highlights while at the hotel, although she had many, was cooking for the Queen in 1973 and then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. In the early 80’s she was approached by the president of the Italian Centennial Hall Mario Nucci to come cook for the hall. Taking the position, she prepared the lunch buffet for many years then went on to banquets at night where she stayed until she retired and making many friendships along the way. Mom loved to cook and bake, and was famous for her lasagna, butter tarts and many other things. Whenever you went to visit her and dad, she was always ready to feed you and give you a glass or 2 of vino.
Beppina was an active member of many clubs and groups where she spent many hours volunteering. She belonged to the Italian Society of Port Arthur, the Ladies Venet Society, the Principe Di Piemonte Society Ladies Auxiliary, The Alpini choir and Corpus Christi Church. She spent many hours with the ladies in the kitchen preparing sandwiches, crostoli, and lots of baking for their Tea’s and then cooking for many days to prepare for the Festa Italiana and Folklore Festival. The Gruppo Alpini was also a big part of her life cooking frico for the men at lunch on the day of the annual banquet and helping to cook for their annual picnics. She enjoyed travelling to Puerto Vallarta in the winter with friends, and took many trips with the Gruppo Alpini to attend annual banquets.
Beppina will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughters Rosanna Rassat, Rita Briska son in law Paul, and loving grandsons Jordan and Steven. Also survived by sister Vittorina Casasola in Italy, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, husband Alfredo, Sisters Anna and Tea, and brother Mario.
The family would like to thank Dr. Johnson and the wonderful staff on unit 3 at Pioneer Ridge for taking such good care of our mother.
