Ayten Mohareb Ozakin Monday May 10th 2021

MOHAREB (ÖZAKIN), AYTEN In her 83rd year from complications from vascular dementia. She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Adel Mohareb. Ayten was the proud and loving mother of Justin (Cindy), Adrian (Melinda), and Eugene (Mahua), and grandmother of Ayden, Samar, and Elina.
Ayten was born May 16, 1938 to Mehmet Turgut Özakın and Ayşe Anise Ansari Özakın in Mardin, Turkey. She is survived by her brothers Selah (Gülsün) and Aydin (Ayten) and sister Aysel (Brian, deceased). Ayten has been loved by and will be missed by many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and friends in Canada, Turkey, Egypt and Australia.
After being impressed by the staff at a local hospital during a childhood illness, she studied nursing and began working as a nurse and midwife. After practicing nursing in Turkey for several years, she was sent to Canada to study neurological nursing at McGill University in Montreal. After completing her studies in Canada and returning to Turkey, she was frustrated at being unable to fully use her hard-won knowledge, so she returned to Canada, where she would stay the rest of her life.
While in Montreal, she worked at the Royal Victoria hospital, where she met Adel Mohareb at a residents’ holiday party in December of 1968. They married the following year and moved to Toronto, where she worked as a nurse in Women’s College Hospital while Adel studied dentistry at the University of Toronto.
After Adel graduated, they moved to Napanee, where they started their family and he began a dental practice. Ayten’s work then focused on home, raising their three sons. She also helped the community, volunteering with Lennox and Addington Seniors Outreach Services, Meals on Wheels, and the Lioness Club, and providing educational seminars to the local seniors. She was a vigorous soul, leisurely walking long distances through the woods near their home and participating in aerobics.
Her home was a welcoming one for neighbours and friends who could count on a sweet piece of her renowned baklava and a strong cup of Turkish coffee, in whose grounds she would tell fortunes. Ayten loved to travel, and after Adel retired they took many cruises together around Europe, Alaska, and the Caribbean and travelled to Fiji and Australia. The entire family travelled to India for Eugene’s wedding.
Many thanks to the staff of the Royale Place Residence and of Arbour Heights in Kingston for helping make Ayten’s final years comfortable.
Visitation details are still pending. A Private family service is being held on Saturday , May 22, 2021 at the Wartman Funeral Home, Napanee Chapel, for those who wish to view the service by Zoom please email info@wfhs.ca for the link.
