After a short battle with cancer, it is with broken hearts the family of the late Austin Francis John Winsor announces his passing. Surrounded by his family at his home in West Pond he passed peacefully away on June 4, 2021.
He was predeceased by his parents Earnest and Gladys Winsor, his siblings Nina Rowsell, Sylvia Winsor, and Richard Winsor. A dedicated husband, father and friend, he is fondly and lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend Donna , his children: Janice, Lisa and Rochelle, grandchild; Mathew Winsor; step children: Clifford (Alisa) Roberts, Clayton and Sylvia Roberts; step grandchildren: Lashonda and Julia Roberts and a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A born leader, Austin loved his family and had a zest for life. He was known for his extensive knowledge, straight shooting, wit, storytelling, gardening and love of nature. He was also known for his ability to fix nearly anything. He was politically opinionated, possessed a friendly, helpful nature and had a tremendous ability to strike up a conversation with whomever he met. Austin also displayed community leadership and served two terms as a Springdale Town Councillor and was appointed to the Board of Community Futures.
The son of an electrician, Austin followed in his father’s footsteps, at the age of 18; he apprenticed as an electrician in Bowaters’ Mill, Corner Brook and continued to work in the electrical field his entire career. He was chief electrician for 10 years at a copper mine in Little Bay. He worked for the Newfoundland Power Commission (Newfoundland Hydro) for three years as a Superintendent for Substations and Maintenance in Western Newfoundland; he was responsible for an area that stretched from Port Aux Basques to Port Saunders. He left Newfoundland Hydro to be the Construction Superintendent for Checo Engineering for two years. In 1975 he decided it was to time to start his own company, as President of EHV ( Extra High Voltage) Construction Ltd. he developed a reputation for quality work and focused on building substations and transmission lines all over the province of Newfoundland and Labrador until his retirement.
Austin operated on the principle that to those whom one meets one greets with respect and fairness. He was well known for his support, fairness and steadfast loyalty to his employees.
Austin will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
