Arletta Elizabeth Ricky Stubbings Buffett Sunday January 3rd 2021

STUBBINGS, Arletta “Ricky” (nee: Buffett) – It is with heartfelt sorrow the family of Arletta ‘Ricky’ Elizabeth Stubbings, announces her passing on January 3rd, 2021 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be sadly missed by all family and friends. She was the beloved wife of Raymond Alexander Stubbings, Loving mother of Paul (Nancy), Kerry (Michael), Lisa (Brian) and Brian (Cathie). Ricky (Grammy) was a cherished grandmother to Matthew, Emily and Michael Stubbings, Kimberley, Darcie and Adam Vandersluis, and Brett and Curtis Sturley. Ricky was a special sister to Lorraine (Bill), and sister-in-law to predeceased Corrine Langdon and predeceased Murray Stubbings. Ricky was also predeceased by life long friends Bob and Alice Freeman.
Ricky always enjoyed her work life and made many friends and acquaintances at her workplace in the Ministry of Health and later in the Ministry of Education. She prided herself on a job well done and strived to keep up with the latest information systems until her retirement at age 65. In the early 80’s Raymond and Ricky bought a Florida vacation home, and along with their good friends the Freemans enjoyed several warm winters in Palm Harbour. Mom always loved the heat and sun, and was not really a winter weather lover! They also enjoyed travel to Costa Rica, Vegas, DR and Europe in their retirement. Mom’s hobbies included crocheting several baby blankets and outfits, for family and friends, reading books and watching « The Little People » show, and gardening. She loved to have flowers in her garden and babied those fledgling plants to grow. Mom loved to have a clean and tidy home and shop for things of beauty, which to her, meant she ‘had made it’, …a far cry from her meagre upbringing in Christie Pits in the 40’s. Also, for her……many childhood summers were spent at her Grandma Koch’s farm near Listowel where her love of horses, cows and rural life started. She also admired the simple life of the neighbouring Mennonites a throw-back to her German roots.
Mom prided herself in always being well dressed, and presentable for whatever the social situation dictated – hair styles, clothes and makeup were necessary for her to feel ‘done’ and ready for whatever. Mom also prided herself on having a good working relationship with her computer and online functions. Mom (Ricky) was kind, quiet, private, but hard-working, a devoted family member who valued her family and her home. She was often selfless, and understanding of any family crisis, and always thought of the positive side, or gave the benefit-of-the-doubt. She welcomed new family members with genuine acceptance and was happy that the family member was happy. She had a witty humour that came through at times of trouble and was generous with her time. She and Raymond enjoyed some extra ‘grandchildren time’ by providing extended babysitting for vacationing adult children, which was very much appreciated. She never once complained, and in fact was always anxious to return home, even when they, themselves, were having an extended vacation stay in Florida….6-8 weeks was the limit. Ricky will also be dearly missed by her large extended family, past neighbourhood friends and many other friends.
She will never be forgotten, as she touched the lives of many.
The family would like send out a special thank you to the tireless staff of LHO ER, C7, C6 and the doctors, as well as other health professionals who assisted with her care and comfort at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. Despite the COVID pandemic, and visiting limitations, the staff at LHO, made every effort possible to streamline communication and visits as allowed with family, and gave Mom the excellent care, and emotional support she deserved.
Resting at Armstrong Funeral home with cremation and interment at Thornton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations will be gratefully accepted to Sick Children’s Hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society, two of her own favourite causes, or to the LHO Foundation.
