VAN DEN HOOGEN, Anne Theresa
1926 – 2021
Anne planned to reach 100, but fell five years short because of dementia.
She was beautiful, smart, witty, funny, stylish, caring, loving, giving, generous, a story teller, sympathetic, a nature lover, a milliner (hat maker) and fashion leader. But also entrepreneurial, independent, stubborn, opinionated, adventurous, persistent, conservative and liberal in values, supporter of many causes (women’s shelter, abused children, nature and environment, indigenous (Indian) peoples and fiercely proud of her Irish heritage.
She was an active traveller, hiker, camper, fisherwoman, columnist and letter writer to the Calgary Herald and an ardent gardener. Her life-long sport was golf.
Anne was the first born of Elmer and Nellie (Beardsall) Conway in a small town in Quebec. She is survived by her brother, Harold, who still lives on the family homestead in Quebec. She was tremendously proud of her Irish clan of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was affectionately called “Tante Anne”.
Equally important to Anne, were her many business associates throughout south and central Alberta. Many people developed a personal friendship with this vivacious and friendly widow (her husband died in 1978), who made a living featuring her husband’s popular paintings (Dick Van den Hoogen).
She adored her husband, Dick, and was devoted to preserving his artistic legacy. She now has her final wish of sharing their ashes in the mountains.
Anne was fluently bilingual. She was politically connected with Liberals (of the Trudeau – Chretien eras), a skilled golfer and winner of many trophies, and a fervent photographer of animals, flowers and scenery, which she printed on coasters and note cards for sale in souvenir shops.
