Andrew Augustine’s Obituary
Dad was welcomed into the world on August 28, 1926 by his Mi’kmaq mother (Annie Benoit) and his father, Bartholomew (Bert) O’Regan. He was the second youngest of their six children. His childhood was spent on the family land where he developed his love of fishing, farming, and hunting. After leaving school he ventured west to Ontario to work on the lake boats. He was beckoned back home by his father to take over the farm and subsequent to that, he met the love of his life, Margaret Moore, whom he wed in 1954. Their marriage was blessed with seven children: Mary (deceased at 4 months of age), Michael (Somporn), Anne (Phillip), Patrick (Kathy), Gerard (Diana), Barry, and Tom (Roseanne).
Dad was committed to providing the best he could for his family. He worked hard all his life and provided an abundance of farmed meat, vegetables and fruit, as well as wild game. Being an insightful man, he decided to further his education and returned to school to complete training in carpentry. Upon completion, he worked as a carpenter for the remainder of his working career until his semi-retirement at the age of 65. After retirement from carpentry, he continued to operate a very successful Strawberry business. His sweet and tasty Bounty strawberries were known all over the West Coast of the island, luring customers from Rose Blanche to Corner Brook.
He always lived his life with integrity, honesty and a commitment to family, community and church. Dad was a people person in spite of his quiet nature. He always enjoyed a good game of cards which he pursued among family and community friends until a change in his health at the age of 90. Despite health challenges in the last five years of his life, he remained cheerful and continued to enjoy visits with family and friends. During those visits, Dad enjoyed talking about the old days and told many humorous stories about his younger years in Codroy Valley. His stories always made us laugh!
Dad thrived under Mom’s loving care until his final days. He was the last surviving member of his birth family. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers (James, Arthur, Terrance, Frank) and sister Mary. He will be lovingly remembered by Margaret, his wife of 67 years, his 6 children, 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Dad’s gentle nature, knowledge, and sense of humor will be missed by all. As children, he gave us the perspective, knowledge, and spiritual strength to adapt to challenging times and situations. We love you Dad, and we will miss you.
The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church in Upper Ferry on Friday, April 16th, at 11am officiated by Father Andrew White. Interment to follow at Mount St. Thomas Cemetery, Great Codroy. Funeral arrangements were in the care of East Haven Funeral Home Inc, 57 Grand Bay Road, Port aux Basques NL, easthavenfuneralhome@bellaliant.com (709)-695-2300 www.easthavenfuneralhome.com
