Allan Thomas Smith
August 23, 1936 — August 13, 2021
Allan Thomas Smith passed away on August 13, 2021 at Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont UHC, Moncton, New Brunswick.
He was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on August 23, 1936, and was the son of the late Thomas and Winnifred (Brown) Smith.
He is lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his sister, Carol Smith Goddard and brother-in-law, Vernon, of Moultonborough, NH, USA; his three nephews: Glen of Weston, MA, (Ilisa), Lee of Wayland, MA, (Susan), Mark of Maynard, MA, (Odette) and one niece, Carolyn of Manchester, NH (Jimmy). He also leaves behind great nephews and great niece as well as cousins in Canada, USA, Scotland and New Zealand. Allan’s dear friends, Emily Murphy of Moncton, James Jones of Montreal, and Joe Leblanc of Nova Scotia along with many, many others that are grieving his loss and are left with a large void in their hearts.
Allan’s first job after high school was at a large printing firm, Business Systems Ltd, Toronto, starting in the mail room and 12 years later, as Personnel Manager. The business was sold in 1960 and Allan went to work in the accounts payable department with the Scarborough Board of Education, employed there until 1968 when he moved to Moncton, New Brunswick. For a short period of time, he worked as office manager for Dollemont’s Fuel and then Sunny Brae Laundry as office manager. He moved on to become assistant manager for Sherman Williams from 1970-1972. He then applied for a job at Brunswick Ford Sales, Ltd in Moncton, starting in the Leasing Department and later moving on to Payroll/Personnel and Accounts Payable. When Brunswick Ford was purchased in the 1980s by Taylor Ford Sales, Ltd, Allan stayed on in the same position until his retirement in 2002.
Allan joined an amateur theatre group, Stage Door, in 1968 and was chosen as Stage Manager. He became life-long friends with many of the actors, production crew and stage hands. For three years Allan drove to Springhill, NS to help teach drama to the inmates at Springhill Medium Security Prison. It was there he worked with Stuart Murray, Anne Murray’s brother. He also volunteered at the Hospice Store in Moncton and enjoyed his time spent with the other volunteers and remained friends with many of them. He had a special fondness for animals, and in 1992 adopted Fancy, a beagle/Chihuahua mix. Allan said, “This was the start of my new life living with the most intelligent, beautiful and loving fur kid in the world”. Fancy moved into his house with his Siamese cat, Maud, and they became best friends. Fancy also befriended Caruso, another Siamese, after the passing of Maude. For 15 years, Fancy was Allan’s constant companion. Cassie, a sweet cat also moved into his heart, and later, a lovable cat, Whiskey, also found a spot in his heart.
Allan had many talents. If you were fortunate enough to have sat at his dinner table and feasted on his delicious and creative meals, you were blessed. He took great joy in sharing his culinary talents. He had a keen sense for home decorating and his advice was sought by many who proclaimed that he missed his calling as an interior decorator.
At an early age, Allan learned gardening skills from his mentor, Mrs. Maud Knox, in Toronto. She took Allan under her wing and infused a life-long passion for the beauty, love and nurturing of flower gardening.
Allan was most happy when he was surrounded by family and friends. He was a loyal friend to all and will be missed by so many.
At Allan’s request there will be no visitation. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. His ashes will be laid to rest alongside his parents at Resthaven Gardens in Toronto, Ontario.
