Obituary for Alice Laura Summers
Alice Laura Summers (née Francis)
June 10, 1926 – December 21, 2021
Devoted wife to Peter, Mother to Linda and Brian (Anita), Grandmother to Sacha, Brittany, Jaleah, Mauricie, Everett, Laurier, and great-grandmother to Chandos, Eva and Mya.
Alice was one of four children, and is pre-deceased by brothers Marshall and Peter, and sister Josie. Family was very important to Alice, she had many nieces and nephews, and enjoyed seeing everybody at frequent family reunions. She always put others needs before her own, sometimes to a fault. Her love and care extended beyond her family – she did volunteer work in hospice care into her 80s.
Prior to being married, she worked as a nurse at Toronto General Hospital, then as an airline stewardess for Trans-Canada Air, flying between Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and Europe. At that time she obtained a degree in Home Economics at UBC. She married Peter Summers in 1959. They adopted two children in Edmonton – Brian in 1965, and Linda in 1966. Alice resumed her career in nursing when her children were old enough.
With Peter, she lived in Montreal, the GTA, Edmonton, Boulder (Colorado), and Geneva (Switzerland). She made friends wherever she went, joining book clubs and bridge groups.
She loved outdoor activities, especially skiing – which she took part in until the age of 91.
She loved to cook, and hosted many friend and family for gourmet dinners. Known as Nana to her grandkids, she was nicknamed “Sugar Nana” for her sweet tooth, as no meal was complete without a delicious dessert.
Alice was an adventure seeker – following her young grandson into the terrain park at the ski hill and Axe throwing at her granddaughter’s 30th birthday. She and Peter travelled much of the world, ranging from the Canadian Arctic, to Macchu Picchu to the Nile in Egypt.
After suffering a fall and broken hip in early November, Alice experienced additional medical complications. Despite the heroic efforts by the medical team at North York General Hospital, life would not go back to being as it was. Alice chose to depart on her own terms and chose Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) and reiterated to all that she had had a good long life. Many thanks to the medical staff for all the time and care they put into Alice’s last days.
