Obituary
Alfred Thomas (Tom) Damant died peacefully at his home in Lacombe, Alberta on January 29, 2021. He will be forever missed by family and friends.
Tom was born in Bentley, Alberta on December 5th, 1930 to Beatrice Mabel (nee Reynolds) and Alfred Percy Damant. When he was a young boy, the family moved to Alder Flats where his paternal grandparents (Mabel Fenton (nee Hart) and Alfred William Damant) had settled. In 1939, the family moved to the farm south of Gull Lake. His maternal grandparents (Minnie Elizabeth (nee Marsh) and Thomas James Reynolds) lived there at that time. This was Tom’s home until 2015 when he moved to Royal Oak Village in Lacombe.
In addition to trout fishing, softball, hockey, curling (he was an outstanding curler), golf, playing cards and board games, the occasional road trip, cross country skiing during his later years, picnicking, and visiting with family and friends, Tom spent 50 or so years as a grain farmer. He loved being outdoors and always watched the weather with patience and humility. He enjoyed relaxing and putting his feet up, but was never afraid to work hard.
When there was nothing else to do, one could find Tom watching sports on the TV: baseball, curling, hockey, football. Slyly, he never quite admitted to having an allegiance to any one team, neither the Oilers or Flames, the Stampeders or Eskimos.
Although Tom never married, he was not without family. He loved and was loved by his siblings Beth (Keith) Hand, George (Carol) Damant, Bill (Lynne) Damant, and Joyce (Martin) Peck. To his many nieces and nephews as well as their children and children’s children, he was known as Uncle Tom.
The time we spent with you, Tom, will be forever treasured.
Tom’s extended family would like to express a very special thank you to Cindy, Misty, and all the friends and staff at Royal Oak Village. You helped make the last five years some of the best for Tom. He spoke of you often.
Thanks to the health care team at Lacombe Hospital and Care Center for treating Tom with dignity and compassion.
Thank you to Dr. Tim Darnell and Dr. Kathy Unger. Tom appreciated your expertise, and also saw you as friends.
Due to COVID restrictions, a brief ceremony will be held at the Bentley Cemetery at 1:30 pm on Sunday February 7, 2021. Attendees are encouraged to wear masks, physically distance, and follow all public health guidelines. Tom would want everyone to be safe.
An in-person gathering of family and friends to celebrate Tom’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, well wishers are encouraged to make a donation to the charitable organization of their choice in Tom’s name.
