Buettner, Albert George
April 19, 1932 – April 11, 2021
On April 11, 2021, the Buettner family lost their patriarch, their memory keeper, a friend, a beloved dad and grandpa, when Albert’s very big heart finally stopped beating. Albert was the third eldest of nine boys, a close band of brothers who all shared Albert’s dry and disarming sense of humor. He was born on the farm in the St. James district in central Saskatchewan. His elementary schooling was at Leavenworth School. The following years were interspersed with helping on the farm, and various jobs before going back to St. Peter’s College at Muenster, SK. to complete his Grade 12, where he came to be affectionately known as “Pa” to his classmates. He worked with SaskPower and then SaskEnergy for 37 years until his retirement in 1987, a career through which he made lifelong friendships. Family was important to Albert, and his own family unit began June 11, 1960, when he married Clarice Fay Donaldson. As their home moved with work assignments in early years throughout the province, their family expanded to include Sheila, Bradley, Lyle and Colin, a couple of dogs in succession, and a converted camper-bus that bound their hearts forever to the riches of Saskatchewan and to each other. Hectic years followed with his children’s activities, but there was even greater fun to be had following his grandkids’ endeavors. Grandpa Albert nurtured a deep and special relationship with each of them, and his pride in their many accomplishments, perhaps most obvious at his report-card lobster-fests, was ever present. In kind, Albert’s grandchildren are proud of their grandpa, and each treasures their genuine friendship with him. Laughter was included as he imparted his wisdom. He carried a deep faith in God that he shared. He reminded his family to pray. We know that he was praying for us. Albert endured a number of medical and health challenges throughout his life. He was an informed patient and an advocate for his own health. We all learned much from the knowledge he gained. His family extends its heartfelt gratitude to all the doctors, especially to Dr. Chernoff, who gave Albert their attentive time and their devoted care. Throughout his life, Albert had a wry and intelligent mischief about him. His always spirited and often hilarious visits challenged and engaged. He was regarded fondly by many people of all ages, drawn to his personal warmth and his sincere interest in them. Whether it be at his coffee meetings reminiscing about times past and tackling the world’s latest events, grappled in a competitively played card game, or gathered to pay final respects to friends lost, he left you filled with his abundant presence, his humour, and his faithful devotion to the value of good people worth knowing well. He will be missed and loved always by his wife of 60 years, Fay; his children, Sheila (Mitchell Holash), Bradley (Gale Stack), and Colin; his grandchildren, Conor (Hailee), Brenner, Kienan, Meagan (Ryan), Katie (Drew), Harvest, Benson, Aspen (Logan), Evan (Tanner) and his great-grandchildren, Emma, Adeline and Henry. Albert was predeceased by his son, Lyle; his brothers, Alvin, Norbert, Leonard and Miles; his parents, Albert and Mary Buettner; father and mother-in-law, Harold and Elsie Donaldson; in-laws, Lloyd, Kenneth and Glen Donaldson, Marion Buettner, Joy Donaldson and other nieces and nephews in the family. Albert’s Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 12:00 noon with immediate family only in attendance at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
