A Corporal of the Great War 43rd Bn Canadian Inf Thursday January 10th 1918

LEDINGHAM
Cpl. George Herbert
(First World War Canadian Soldier Identified)
In the Commonwealth War Graves Canadian Cemetery, Tilloy-Lez-Cambrai, France; is a grave identified as “A Corporal of the Great War. 43rd Bn Canadian Inf. 12th October 1918”. Through extensive research conducted by the Canadian Armed Forces and the Commonwealth War Grave Commission it has been determined that this grave is that of 859287 Cpl. George Ledingham 43 Battalion the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The 43rd Battalion CEF is perpetuated by the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada from Winnipeg Manitoba; an infantry unit of the Canadian Army.
Recently, after an exhaustive, thorough and ongoing search by the Canadian Directorate of History and Heritage to identify and formerly mark the actual grave of a Canadian Soldier interred as an “Unknown Soldier”, Cpl. George H. Ledingham’s grave has been identified. At a date to be determined the current headstone will be replaced with one inscribed with Cpl Ledingham’s name”.
Accordingly, the location of Cpl. Ledingham’s final resting place will be formerly recognized by the Canadian Government and its people at a “Notification of Next-of-kin” in the Almonte Legion on 14 Nov, 2021. Lt-Col. Jon Baker & Chief Warrant Officer John Dawson, officiating,
Cpl. Ledingham’s next-of-kin, Wayne McKay, Ted McKay and Mrs. Pauline Ferdinand (McKay), will be present. As well as representatives of the late James & Joan McKay. Cpl. Ledingham was the Great Uncle of the McKay family of Almonte, Ontario.
In compliance with Covid-19 restrictions the “Formal Notification” ceremony will be by invitation only.
Members of the public are invited to sign in to the condolence page provided. To pay their respects and remember the ultimate sacrifice made, not only by Cpl. Ledingham, but by all Canadian men & women during the terrible conflicts fought for freedom.
