Rosa Durette
1934-2021
It is with an immense sadness that
we inform you that Rosa Durette of Atholville, passed away on Tuesday,
April 13th, 2021 at the Campbellton Regional
Hospital, she was 86-years old. During this past year, maman was
afflicted by a cancer that she faced with an extraordinary
courage.
She was born in Atholville, on
December 16th, 1934, the youngest daughter of
the late Honoré Durette and the late Alice Goulet, she was
the youngest of 7 children, of whom she was the last survivor – Henri
(Berthe Savoie), Mabel (Robert White), Wallace,
Amédé (Marie-Jeanne Babin), Alice (Louis
Poirier) et Lionel (Isabel « Peewee »
Dobson).
Rosa was a thoughtful and
affectionate mother for her 3 children, Louis D’Amour
(Ginette Roy) from Bathurst, Denis D’Amour (Annette
Melanson) from Moncton, and Colette D’Amour
(André Hamel) from St-Hubert, Qc.
Always the first one up every
morning, maman would prepare a good little breakfast that we ate
quietly in our kitchen, as she was getting our school clothes ready.
Since we lived close to our school, a hot dinner would await us every
lunchtime. At the end of the school day, maman was always there
waiting for us, either ironing our clothes, finishing a laundry, or
polishing the floors that she made a point of keeping shiny. After
homework and some time to play outside with friends, we would come
back to our house to enjoy a traditional family supper. Our father,
Antonio D’Amour (1932-2005), worked hard all week long. And
so, it was mainly maman who was looking after us kids, with lots of
love, a good sense of humor and, of course, a strict
discipline.
Rosa Durette, maman, was a
dedicated mother, an excellent cook, and a hostess like no other when
family and friends came over, or while hosting big family gatherings
around the Holidays. Maman had a keen judgment, an exceptional memory
and a sense of humor that was sometimes teasing, sometimes
spicy.
Over the years, our little family
lived in Dalhousie, Eel River Crossing, Chicoutimi, Bathurst and
Campbellton. But maman had her roots firmly planted in Atholville and
it is in her beautiful native village that she lived until the end,
surrounded by her nieces, their children, and
grandchildren.
The extended Durette, Poirier,
Boudreau, Pitre, Constable, Gallant, and Audet family, from
Atholville, deserves many praises and thanks for all the kindness they
had for maman over the years. We want to acknowledge specially
Brigitte (Boudreau) McNaughton who was an angel of compassion,
kindness, and generosity. She did so many thoughtful acts of kindness,
brought maman countless delicious meals and made frequent visits that
filled her heart with humor and love. We also want to thank the staff
of the Campbellton Regional Hospital for all their good
care.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic and social distancing
protocols, no commemorative service is scheduled at this
time.
