John’s Obituary
WAYBRET, John Joseph – 90, of Clam Point, passed away on Monday, April 12th, 2021 at Roseway Hospital. Born on July 29, 1930, he was the son of the late Ashton Waybret and the late Leanis Daley. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather. John is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Virginia; daughter, Marilee (Bill) MacQuarrie, son Greg (Doris) Waybret, grand-daughters Tania (Alvin), Carla (Peter), Robyn (Serge) and Shaneen(Bruce) , grand-sons Timmy (Nikki) and Devan (Chantel) and many many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by brother Clyde and sister Betty (Gordon) and Sylvia (Larry). John was predeceased by his parents, son Johnny, brothers Howard, Joseph, Foster and sisters Pauline , Olive, and Dolly. John lived his life on Cape Sable Island, surrounded by the Atlantic, the second love of his life. He was a career lobster fisherman, enjoying an early retirement in the early 90’s when he sold his lobster boat, but that didn’t stop him from visiting the local wharves on a daily basis. His CB radio in the kitchen was never quiet – as he kept up to speed on the daily gossip. He loved to be outdoors with his many pastimes -gunning, mossing, clamming, camping and checking out all his secret spots on the island. He truly lived from the land – fishing and hunting, tending his gardens and fruit trees and raising chickens. If he wasn’t enjoying a tea with his wife, Gin – he would be found puttering in his barn working on his many woodworking projects. Many of his duck carvings are displayed in and around many homes in Cape Island and Nova Scotia and around the world. His famous Santa Claus ornaments that he whittled and painted by hand during the winter months are proudly hung on hundreds of trees. He loved to build anything you could dream up – as long as it didn’t require electrical or plumbing. John was a long standing member and Deacon of the Stoney Island Baptist church, doing whatever was required to help out. He will be deeply missed by his church family. John loved to tease and make everyone smile – and he never turned down a game of SkipBo. With a personality as large as life, he will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his family and friends and everyone who had the good fortune to know him. How lucky are we to have someone in our lives that makes saying goodbye so hard. If wealth was measured by the quality and quantity of a person’s friends, then John leaves this earthly world as the richest guy around. There will be a visitation Thursday, 6-7 p.m., at the H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. The funeral service will be held Friday, April 16, 2 p.m. at the H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington, with Pastor Wayne Crowell officiating. Interment to follow in the Atlantic Cemetery, Stoney Island. Due to COVID-19 protocols, attendance at the visitation and the funeral will be limited to family and invited guests. The funeral will be live-streamed and a recording of the service will be available on the Huskilson’s website. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to make donations in John’s memory consider the Rosalin Nickerson Care Fund or a charity of choice. We are eternally grateful to the staff at Roseway Hospital for the gracious care provided during John’s final days.
