Obituary of Michele Santoro
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father at the Sault Area Hospital, with his daughter by his side, on Sunday, March 21, 2021 in his 96th year. Reunited with his loving wife of over 60 years, Gilda (Plastino). Cherished daddy of Rose Giovagnoli (George), late Franca Guzzo (Michele) and Ann Marie Santoro. Loving nonno of Paul Giovagnoli (Machelle), Laura Scarfo (Santo), Frank Guzzo (Nicki) and Steven Guzzo (Lisa). Adored great grandfather of Douglas (Stephanie), Maria, Giuseppe, Abigail, Daniela, Alexis, Aerabella, Amia, Michaela, late Sophia and Leo. Brother of Giuseppe Santoro (late Iola), Teresa Cimino (late Pasquale), Emilia Santoro of Italy, Ottavio Santoro (Maria) and predeceased by Antonio Santoro (late Emilia) of Argentina, Salvatore Santoro (Luisa) of Italy, and Michelina Adamo (late Eugenio). Predeceased by his sister-in-law Lina Ianni (Michele). He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.
Michele was born in Aiello, Calabro, Italy and spent time working in Italy, Belgium, and France before immigrating to Canada in 1958 to give his family a better life. He retired from Algoma Tubes in 1988. He had a sense of adventure and enjoyed travelling to sunny, warm destinations. He had a passion for the outdoors and was known for his gardening skills. He took pride in his tomato and pepper plants, and his blooming fig tree – if you were not careful you might find a gifted plum tree in your backyard. He loved making his own wine and sausages, and after retirement he developed a flair for Italian cooking, mastering the spaghetti frittata. He had a great sense of humour, was very playful and loved to tease. People naturally gravitated to him and he was affectionately known as “the mayor of Northridge” because of his friendly, outgoing nature and his genuine interest in others. He had a competitive nature and enjoyed playing Bocce, Scopa, and Briscola. He was a lifelong learner and at age 93 he learned how to use the computer. He epitomized unconditional love and always had a smile for everyone.
Due to the current pandemic a private funeral mass will take place. Entombment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to Meals on Wheels or the Sault Area Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family. A special thank you to the entire 3B health care staff at SAH, including Drs. Booth, Bowen, White, Buehner, Jenkins and Apostle for taking exceptional care of our dad. A heartfelt thanks to the compassionate health care team at CBI Home Health with special recognition to James Keating, dad’s PSW and “Scopa” worthy opponent. Thank you to dad’s pharmacist Claudio Cavaliere for the many consultations and assistance over the years. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
