Thérèse lived an intentioned and authentic life. She loved unconditionally with all her heart and soul. Her family, immediate and extended, was everything to her. She may have been small in stature, but her spirit was larger than life! Thérèse derived great pleasure and satisfaction from working with her strong, soft and caring, beautiful hands. She planted and tended a large vegetable garden in order to feed her family fresh wholesome foods. With Fall’s garden bounty, Thérèse tirelessly canned enough ketchup, pickles, relish and tomatoes to last the whole year long. She and Mathieu brought this love of the land with them to the Valley Garden Residence by planting the farrowed garden beds when they first moved in.
The image of Thérèse sitting at her sewing machine working on many different projects remains a vivid one: making clothing for the family, piecing together quilts, and repairing threadbare farm work pants. After the sale of their farm, and she and Mathieu moved to Alexandria, Thérèse had more time on her hands and they turned to creating crafts of all kinds and ceramics. Our family was gifted many of mom’s creations, and these treasures will forever be part of her legacy.
Thérèse also generously gave her time, volunteering for various organizations. Le Club d’Age D’or d’Alexandria and Le Cercle des Fermieres benefited from her commitment and in return provided her with a strong community of friends.
Perhaps one of Thérèse’s greatest accomplishments was learning to drive at the age of 65. She had always resisted due to her fear and anxiety of getting behind the wheel of a car. Spurred on by feeling stranded and isolated when Mathieu was hospitalized, she bravely signed up for driving lessons and through her sheer determination and courage she succeeded in getting her driving license and went on to drive for another 20 years.
