Lillian (Lil)’s Obituary
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family announce the peaceful passing of our loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Lillian (Lill) Sybil Marshall (nee Jeans) at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s, NL on Sunday, March 14th, 2021 at the age of 88 years. Born in Port aux Basques, NL, Lill was the daughter of the late Harold and Dora Jeans (nee Evans). She was also predeceased by her brothers; Victor (Vera) Jeans, Vernon Jeans, Robert Jeans, sisters; Vera (Bill) Gullage, Ada (Tim) McCarthy, Ruth Marks, father and mother-in-law; Norman and Evangeline Marshall (nee Kettle), brothers-in-law; Stanley Marshall and Bryce Joyce.
Lill leaves to mourn with many fond and precious memories her loving husband of 66 years; Ronald (Ron) Marshall, sons; Robert (Linda Pike) Marshall of Mount Pearl, NL, Brian (Susan Abercrombie) Marshall of Deer Valley, SK, daughter; Valarie (Kevin) Wall of Wabush, NL, grandchildren; Sarah (Mike) Lemmons of Toronto, ON, Alexis Marshall of Winkler, MB, Chantelle (Andy) Gillis of Labrador City, Kellan Marshall of Montreal, QB, great-grandchildren; Chase Gillis and Mason Gillis.
Lill also leaves behind her sisters-in-law; Joan Joyce and Grace (Joe) Jeans, both of Port aux Basques, NL, Norma (Peter) Philp, and brothers-in-law; Angus Marks and John (Leona) Marshall all of Corner Brook, NL.
Lill will be forever missed by her caregivers Gertie O’Quinn of South Branch, NL, and Genevieve Flannigan of Mount Pearl, NL as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
In her younger years, Lill worked for Fowlow’s Wholesale. It was clear to Cecil Fowlow that she wanted to advance herself and he loaned her the money for her tuition to attend Bishop’s Fields College in St. John’s, where she took a secretarial program. Upon completion of the program, she returned to work for Fowlows. Fowlow’s Wholesale was followed by T.J. Hardy’s where she worked until leaving to support her husband’s business with Imperial Oil.
In the late sixties, Lill moved to Wabush, Labrador, with her kids in tow, her husband Ron already there working for Wabush Mines. She initially worked at the Ayres Department store in Wabush, followed by a job as Executive Housekeeper at the Sir Wilfred Grenfell Hotel, working for Alphonse Rudkowski. Upon her husband Ron’s retirement, Lill and Ron moved back to Port Aux Basques and subsequently settled in South Branch. She finished her career working as Assistant Manager of the Ferry Terminal Cafeteria in Port aux Basques. In 2014, both her and Ron moved to St. John’s to be near medical facilities.
Lillian, fondly known as Lill, was a very remarkable woman. Her family has many fond memories of her life. They lovingly remember her “wearing the pants of the house”. She meant business and you knew better than to cross her. Her word was the final one, always making good decisions for her family! When her oldest son attended university, she did without to ensure his tuition was paid and ensured he finished his degree. When her son decided to quit engineering and change his major, she said “Now my son, I’m going to come out there and haul you out of that”, with a few expletives thrown in! She made it clear that she didn’t like that decision but calmed down and supported it. Her family were always her first and foremost priority and it clearly showed.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 17th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at East Haven Funeral Home Inc. The funeral service will take place on Thursday, March 18th at 2 pm from East Haven Funeral Home Inc in Grand Bay-Port aux Basques officiated by Rev. Jane Allen.
