It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband Ronald Walter Hanson, a Father, Papa and Uncle.
Ron fought a long hard battle with Colon Cancer and never complained a day. He passed away at home surrounded by family on February 27, 2021 at 11:30 am.
Ron was born in Rossland, BC, June 13, 1947 to Walter and Dorothy Hanson, and grew up as an « only child’ due to the loss of both of his sisters (Janet a few days old and Judy who was 14 years old).
Ron always had a sense of adventure even as a wee boy. One day in Rossland Ronny hiked his dog over the fence and they were on an adventure. They made it to the creek and unfortunately Ronny fell in. His dog saved Ronny’s life by grabbing onto the collar of his shirt and kept Ronny’s head above water until a passerby saw and pulled Ronny out of the water. Ronny and his dog made headlines in the Rossland paper at the time, and this story continues to be told!
1969 was the best year of Ron’s life. In January he met Connie Van Tassel who worked for his mother at Simpson Sears, and in February he signed on at Cominco, where he apprenticed and became a Journeyman Pipefitter, retiring after 36 years.
Ron belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion and the Trail Men’s Curling Club (having bragging rights of scoring an eight ender in 1980). Ron loved to cruise in his flashy cars as a young man, and in his later years loved golfing and camping. In Ron and Connie’s latter years, they became members of the Escapee’s RV Association (BC and AB). In case you don’t know, Ron ‘loved to eat ‘volumes’ of food’, and really never put any weight on. While on an Alaska Cruise, people were fascinated by his appetite, and they hadn’t seen anything yet. Ernie ordered Ron a ‘bowl of ice cream’, but requested 36 scoops of ice cream! The Chef came out with it, and guests in the dining room had to watch, as he devoured all 36 scoops.
Connie and Ron married in 1976. It was ‘A love story made in Heaven’. He adored her, and helped in any and everywhere in the kitchen. Connie called him ‘Hobart’ and he answered to it! During their 44 years of marriage, they had two children, Rhonda (Curtis Langford) and Shawn (Thea) Hanson, and followed by four beloved grandchildren, Ayla and Carter Langford and Hunter and Axel Hanson. Ron lived to see all his grandchildren born, and this was a blessing. He is survived by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Gerry/Ernie, Richard/Anita and Debbie, ‘neices/nephews’ Christa, Darelyn, Christopher, Dustin, Lindsay and Jeffery, step sister Marg/Ray and step-brother Brian, and many extended relatives from BC and USA.
Ron is predeceased by parents Walter and Dorothy Hanson, in-laws Norman and Dolores Van Tassel, sisters Judy and Janet, step-mother Anne Hanson, and brother-in-law Ernie Miles. Special mention to Aunt Fran and Uncle Gordie Lynn whom Ron was very close to.
Ron’s family would like to thank the following: Doctors, Nurses and Staff. (Dr. Scotland) KBRH Oncology, KBRH Kiro Palliative Care, KBRH Emergency Department and Columbia Family Medicine. Also a bouquet of thanks to our family and friends for all their assistance during these difficult times. Connie is ever indebted to everyone. It has been a long journey and Ron you will be missed! Love Connie, Rhonda, Shawn and families.
