CALDER, Hugh Alexander “Chuck” – It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Hugh “Chuck” Calder of Kingston, Nova Scotia, who died peacefully on February 26th, 2021 after a brief illness at the age of 77. Affectionately known as Chuck, Huck, Dad, Grandpa, Grampie. Born in Springhill, NS Hugh was a son of the late Hugh and Valerie (Doncaster) Calder. Hugh joined the army as a boy soldier before remustering to the RCAF as an aviation technician and a second time as a flight engineer. Hugh was proud of his 36 year military career serving as a member of the Air Force, embodying « There’s no life like it”. As an engineer, he flew on the UH-1 Huey, Buffalo, C1-130 Hercules, Boeing 707, finishing his career on the CP-140 Aurora. Hugh’s military career took him on many adventures and provided many experiences allowing him to travel the world. He had the privilege of flying both the Prime Minister and Queen, while achieving the milestone of 10,000 flying hours. Hugh’s second “career” was community service. As a longtime member of the Lions Club and volunteer for the annual tax program he spent many years giving back. Other proud moments included the restoration of two war planes. Known for his story telling, humour, love for dogs and for life, he will be greatly missed. Hugh is survived by his wife and soulmate, Sandra (Duffe); his daughters, Lisa (Peter), Susan (Mike), Jennifer (Mike); his grandchildren, Kailey, Chloe, Avery, and Hayley; his siblings, Lowell (Kathy), David (Arlene), Brian, (Chris), Heather (Hal), his sister-in-law Jane (John) and many other extended family members. A special thanks to all the healthcare professionals who assisted with Hugh’s care including Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Middleton, VON healthcare providers, Annapolis Valley Home Care, Dr. McLean, and the wonderful friends and neighbours who have supported the family with endless meals, assistance and thoughts during this difficult time. Words cannot express the appreciation of the support and the family will be forever grateful. If desired, donations in Hugh’s memory would be appreciated and may be made to Diabetes Canada, Kings County SPCA, QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation or a charity of choice. A private, by invitation only, celebration of Hugh’s life, will be held at the Kingston Lions Hall, 1482 Veterans Lane, Kingston on Sunday, March 7th, 2021. In keeping with health safety protocols, face masks and social distancing must be followed.
