Michael Frederick Walsh
1941-2021
Michael Frederick « Mike »
Walsh passed away in the early morning hours of February 24, 2021. He
left behind his beloved wife of sixty-two years, Patricia
« Pat », and his three children Heather, Stephen and
Lee. He is also mourned by his sister, Beth; his grandchildren
Courtney, Patrick, Sarah and Jenna; and his great-grandchildren Jamie,
Ryder, Bayze and Drew. Michael « Mike » was a devoted
son to his mother, Gwen, who passed before him. He was also
predeceased by his father, Frederick « Fred » and his
stepfather John.
Michael was
born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on July 27, 1941. He and his mother and
sister moved to the Annapolis Valley when he was a child, living with
his grandmother Louise, and his Aunt Mary and Uncle Perry for a time.
It was in Kentville where he met and married the love of his life,
Patricia Brown, in 1959. He worked for the Dominion Atlantic Railway
for thirty-seven years, first at the train station in Kentville, and
then in the gypsum yards in Hantsport. He was proud to receive his
Certificate of Apprenticeship as a qualified Carman (carpenter) in
1963.
He was a
quiet man and a homebody who valued his free time. He enjoyed the
simple things in life. He was a lover of all animals and particularly
adored his cocker spaniel, Chester. Michael was very straightforward,
spoke his mind at all times, and had no time for those who put on
airs, or thought they were better than
others.
In his
youth, Michael was a talented baseball player. He played the snare
drum in a marching band. He enjoyed a lively game of cards and was an
avid reader. He was a huge sports fan, and although not a big
traveller, was thrilled to see a NASCAR race in New Hampshire and a
Kansas City Chiefs game in Missouri with his mother and
stepfather.
Michael
loved music of all kinds. He listened to everything from The Platters
to Englebert Humperdinck, but country classics were his favorite.
Music brought him peace and joy throughout his life. He also
loved classic movies and television shows. He loved to laugh, and the
old Pink Panther movies always made him laugh out
loud.
He loved
spending time by the ocean, especially at Lower Kingsburg, a special
place for him. Most of all Michael just liked being outside. Tending
his garden. Sitting in a chair enjoying a cold drink on a hot day. And
in his final years, sitting on his deck, enjoying the sunshine on his
face.
Michael’s ashes will be interred when the
warmth returns, at the top of the hill at Hillaton Cemetery, where he
will be in the sunshine once again. As Hank Williams
wrote:
The Lord
smiled down on this life of
mine
And sent me
the love of Sunshine
Rest in
Peace. We will miss you.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a
charity of your choice. A private family service will be held for
Michael at a later date. Funeral
