Lloyd Ramsey MacDonald
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Lloyd MacDonald, 82, of Sherwood Park, Alberta. He passed away in the early hours of Feb.1, 2021 at the U of A hospital in Edmonton after complications with aspiration pneumonia. A 19-year cancer survivor, he always remained positive and never complained.
The youngest of four brothers, he was born on Feb. 8, 1938, to John (Fireman Jack) and Nellie MacDonald of Sydney (Coxheath), Nova Scotia.
Lloyd joined the RCMP in 1956. His first posting was in Ontario, where he met his loving wife of 60 years, Marie in 1958. Lloyd was transferred to the Yukon that same year. Marie soon joined him and they were married in 1960 in Whitehorse. From there they went to New Brunswick where their two daughters Cathy and Linda were born.
Lloyd’s next posting was Depot Division Regina as a swimming instructor, described as “one of the good guys” by one of his former recruits. Soon after arriving in Regina, the birth of twins Brian and Gordon completed the family.
Lloyd won the coveted Connaught Cup for pistol marksmanship in 1968.
1968 also saw Lloyd transfer to the Forensic Lab in Regina to work as a Firearms and Toolmark Examiner.
In 1972 Lloyd was promoted to Staff Sergeant and posted to K Division where he oversaw the Firearms Section of the Forensic Lab in Edmonton, retiring in 1980 after 25 years of service. He then became part of the Provincial Legislative Security team where he worked for Premiers Lougheed, Getty and Klein until 1997.
Lloyd was a devoted family man and travelled (by station wagon) extensively in Canada and the USA with Marie and the children. He was a lifelong amateur hockey player (Old Bucks, Vintage, Senior Lancers) and NHL fan. He was also an avid outdoorsman. He spent many summer days fly fishing and, in the fall, enjoyed deer, moose and grouse hunting.
He was loved and respected by hundreds of people from Premiers of provinces and their wives, fellow ex RCMP members, old timer’s hockey players to doctors, neighbours, friends and of course family. He is survived by his wife Marie, his four children, seven grandchildren, many adoring nieces and nephews and their children, and dozens of friends. He was a selfless, friendly, loving, kind helpful man who served others throughout his life, and his passing will leave a huge hole in the world he has left behind.
Due to the COVID pandemic Interment will follow at a later date.
Following his wishes, Lloyd’s ashes will be set to rest at the RCMP columbarium at the Fort Saskatchewan cemetery, and a memorial will be planned for warmer, more amenable months.
