Mary Margarit 2021

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Ms. Mary A. Margarit announce her passing on February 11, 2021 at the age of 99 years. Mary was born on September 25, 1921 in Fort William, Ontario to Carmina and Battista Margarit and welcomed into the family by her two older brothers.
Mary embodied faith, kindness, humility and love in every aspect of her life. As a lifetime resident of McLaughlin Street, Mary was lovingly known as ‘Aunty Mary’ or ‘Cousin Mary’ to everyone she cared for. Aunty Mary always welcomed visits from family and friends, never running out of cookies, treats and coffee to share.
Educated locally, Aunty Mary worked for many years in the office of the Metropolitan Store until retiring to care for her parents at home. She eventually returned to the workforce working at Walter Brown Jewellers and Zellers.
Aunty Mary’s entire life was devoted to her family and her faith. She enjoyed keeping her garden, knitting and crocheting and supporting many charities. Throughout her lifetime she cooked many Sunday dinners for her family and enjoyed her afternoons running back and forth from the kitchen to the living room to play her card hand. Aunty Mary’s daily routine included taking in daily mass at St. Dominic’s Church and then St. Peter’s Church. Despite not having children of her own, Aunty Mary became a surrogate mother, grandmother and great grandmother to many. Throughout her life, she enlightened so many – not through words but by living life the way she did. Children always held a special place in her heart and she was so beloved by all of her nieces and nephews.
Mary is predeceased by her parents, her brothers Primo and Alfredo and sister Elda (in infancy). Also waiting to greet her again is her great nephew Joseph with whom she has a special bond. Aunty Mary will be sadly missed by her nieces, nephews, cousins and their families but will remain a strong guiding spirit in their lives. Special thank you to the healthcare staff and caregivers at HRM who provided care to Mary over the past few years.
A funeral mass at St. Peter’s Church will be held at a later date when COVID-19 restrictions allow. Interment will be held at St. Patrick’s cemetery. Should friends desire, donations to St. Peter’s Church or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
‘The best things in life are nearest: breath in your nostrils, light in your eyes, flowers at your feet, duties at your hand, the path of right just before you. Then do not grasp at the stars, but do life’s plain, common work as it comes, certain that daily duties and daily bread are the sweetest things in life.’ Robert Louis Stevenson
Eternal rest, grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen
