Fr. Garth Millar died peacefully in Victoria, B.C., on February 2, 2021, after a long illness. Born on June 6, 1938, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, the second child of Alexander MacDonald Millar and Kathryn Isobel Millar (Abel), Garth was brought to Victoria as a child. In the 1970s and 1980s, he worked as a securities broker at Pitfield Mackay Ross, a futures broker at International Futures Ltd., and in retail sales at Woodward’s. In 1985, he married Joan Margaret Millar (Climenhaga) and later commenced studies at the Vancouver School of Theology, completing a Master of Divinity in 1992. He was ordained a Deacon in the Anglican Church in 1991. In 1992 he was ordained Priest. Garth served at Christ Church, Alert Bay, and as Rural Dean of Nimpkish from 1992 to 1997, and at St. Barnabas Church, Victoria, from, 1997 to 2001.
He and Joan, who predeceased him in 2020, loved to travel and visited Europe and Australia together. He was predeceased by his parents and his elder brother Ian Millar. He is survived by his sister-in-law Norma Millar of Brisbane, Australia, nephew Glen Millar of Brisbane (married to Sarah with children Jack, Camille and Daniel) and nieces Alison Paton of Canberra (married to Steve with children Nicholas and Emma) and Joanne Millar (daughter Alice) of Brisbane, and by brother-in-law David Climenhaga of St. Albert, Alberta (married to Luanne with children Kathryn and Lily). A graveside service was held on February 11, 2021 at the Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria. A requiem mass and celebration of life for Garth and Joan will be held at a future date when restrictions on gatherings have been lifted.
