Eleanor’s Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Eleanor Hobbs (Shanko) announce her passing on January 30, 2021. Born on February 23, 1924, to John and Lily Shanko, Eleanor was the second youngest of seven children raised on the family farm near Verwood, SK. Eleanor attended Normal School in Moose Jaw and taught in various communities in Southern Saskatchewan. It was while she was teaching in Crane Valley that she met Walter Hobbs in 1945. They married in 1946 and moved to the farm west of Crane Valley. Eleanor was an active community member throughout her life. Besides teaching school and giving piano lessons, Eleanor was the organist at Crane Valley United Church, a member of the Ladies Aid and an avid curler. Eleanor was a 4-H leader for a number of years teaching Homecraft. She was a 60-year member of the Verwood Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was the organist and held many positions over the years. Eleanor served on the board of Camp Woodboia for a number of years. Eleanor retired from teaching in 1983 after battling cancer. In retirement, she tended her garden and flowers. She grew a large garden each year, sharing her bounty with family and friends. Family meant everything to Eleanor. She held annual Easter egg colouring days with her grandchildren and compiled photo albums for her family. When Walter died in 2002, Eleanor moved to Assiniboia and lived in one of the Jubilee cottages. She continued to garden and played piano at both The Villa and Ross-Payant Nursing Home. She moved to the Bentley in Moose Jaw in 2014. Eleanor is predeceased by her parents, her husband Walter and her six siblings: Edward, Lena, Alvina, Elda, Lawrence and Enid. She is survived by her children: Richard (Marg), Elaine (Don), and Terry (Heather) Her grandchildren: Jeff (Sandra), Leanne (Byron), Susan (Jason), Jason (Patti), Kyle (Dani), Adam (Kendra) and Tom (Erin). Her great-grandchildren: Amanda, Karlie, Keabyn, Jordyn, Tyler, Kaden, Jeremy, Jace, Jada, Jude, Ash, Ivy, Brody, and Brooklyn along with her sister-in-law Ann Hobbs and numerous nieces and nephews. Eleanor was a kind and generous person and will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. The family would like to thank the staff of Providence Place for their excellent care.
