Luise Kathe Pahl (née Neufeld) was born in Neuendorf, Chortitza Colony, Russia (now Shirokoye, Ukraine), on November 29, 1937. Her mother Katharina, herself, and her four siblings fled Russia in 1943 along with many other German-speaking Mennonites. In November of 1952, sponsored by Cornelius and Anna Boschmann through the Mennonite Central Committee, their family emigrated from East Germany to Carrot River, Saskatchewan, where they lived for several years. Kathe, along with her mother, later moved to Vineland, Ontario, and later to Waterloo, ON.
Kathe is survived by her younger siblings, John, Olga, Gary, and Jake, and by her daughter, Heidi, and their extended families.
Kathe served for a time as a missionary with the Worldwide European Fellowship in the Italian Tyrol, where she met her first husband, Otto Dell’Andrea. She studied to become a geriatric care nurse and worked in this career for a number of years. Later in life she remarried to Willy Pahl, who passed away in 2018.
Kathe lived a life devoted to helping and serving others, whether by helping with her younger siblings as their family escaped conflict in World War II, or by blessing family and friends with copious amounts of home cooked food. She was greatly involved in the lives of her three grandchildren, Joseph, Andrew, and Angelica, and is fondly remembered for the many lessons she taught them and hours she spent taking them on trips, such as picking blueberries near Port Burwell.
Kathe passed away on Sunday, January 31st, 2021, after a brief period of illness.
