Obituary
At 7:15 am on Sunday, January 24, 2021, Heaven gained another angel when Sophia passed away at the age of 67 years. Sophia was born in Athens, Greece on September 10, 1953. In 1979 Sophia immigrated to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan where she opened her first of many restaurants; working long hours, 7 days a week for many years. Sophia’s strong work ethic and dedication was not only seen in her career but also in her family life; she cared for her father, during his own battle with Huntington’s, as well as her mother. Sadly, Sophia lost her son, Nikolaos in 1999 to a sudden death. Even through this tragedy, Sophia continued to work hard and be the strength for her family.
Eventually, Sophia did retire and settled in Calgary where she was able to focus on her faith and attend St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Just as strong as her faith, was her love for her family and Sophia was able to see her last grandchild born to her youngest son. Not only did she have love, passion, determination, strength, and unconditional love for her grandchildren but she was able to share her own birthdate with her youngest grandchild, a prediction she had made mere months prior.
Sophia had battled Huntington’s disease for many years but never lost her positive outlook on life. Eventually, Sophia’s illness led her to move to a care facility where she would catch COVID at the end of December. With her worsening condition, eventually she was transferred to Rockyview hospital where she would pass away from COVID pneumonia, taking her last breath with her three children by her side.
Sophia is survived by her children Eleftheria (Argyrios) Koutsoumpos, Xenia (Robert) Frizell, and Georgios (Kelsey) Zigopoulos as well as her grandchildren Eleni (Anthony), Pandelis, Sophia, Natalia, Alyssa, and Nikolaos.
Sophia is predeceased by her father Nikolaos Yiannakoulias (1996), mother Dimitra Yiannakoulia (2008) and son Nikolaos Zygopoulos (1999).
