Obituary of Viola Schartner
Our dear Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, Viola Frances Wiebe Schartner was born September 22nd,1930, in Steinbach, Manitoba to Frank P. and Annie Barkman Wiebe. She peacefully passed away on the morning of November 28th, 2021, at Grande Prairie, Alberta, reaching the age of 91.
Mom spent her childhood and early youth years in Steinbach, with her parents and 5 siblings. They had a happy, loving home. Mom made many lifelong friends in her growing up years in Manitoba. She made her commitment to follow the Lord at a young age and was baptized becoming a member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. She remained faithful to these vows until the end.
At the age of 19 she moved with her parents and her 2 younger siblings to Abbotsford, BC, when her father was called to pastor the congregation there. While Mom found it difficult to leave her life in Steinbach behind, she soon made many more lifelong friends in BC.
On February 6th, 1953, she married our Dad, Jake Schartner, and they spent 61 happy years together. They bought a farm in the Abbotsford area and raised broilers. They welcomed 3 daughters into their home through adoption, whom they loved unconditionally, providing a secure, happy home. In 1978 they moved to Enderby, BC ,where they had a pig farm, and a meat cutting business. In 1984 they moved to Neilburg, Saskatchewan, where they had a hardware store. In 1991, they moved back to Enderby where they spent their happy retirement years. In November of 2011, due to growing health issues, they made the move to the seniors home in Ridgevalley, Alberta.
Mom was a hospitable person, and together with Dad ,welcomed many people into their home. There was no age limit to Mom’s friendships, and people young and old were drawn to her. She was very involved in both the meat cutting business and in the hardware store, doing the books and helping in other ways, being a true partner to Dad in every way. She was a conscientious person, and her deepest desire was to follow God’s will and to make it to Heaven someday. She was a loving wife and mother and taught us honesty, integrity, and many other things.
When Dad passed away in 2014 Mom grieved deeply and greatly missed him. Her two youngest granddaughters were a source of great comfort to her during these last years, along with other family and the RVH nursing staff. Her faith in God was a strength to her and to us.
She leaves to mourn her passing 3 daughters: Marilyn of Rabbit Lake, SK; Ruth and husband Myron Wiebe of Neilburg, SK; and Janice and husband Rob Hoag of Heart Valley, AB; grandchildren Melissa Schartner, Kyle and Wendy Wiebe and their 2 children; Mandy Isaac and her 2 children; Tayla Stourach and her son; Rick and Becky Wiebe and their 3 children; Kate-Lynn and Shawn Wohlgemuth, Jonathon, Tanya, Zachary, Lacie and Ashlee Hoag. Also left behind are sister- in- law Marlene Wiebe; her husbands family, Marion Friesen, John and Dorothy Schartner, June and Roger Fast, Annette Kelly, Sam and Grace Schartner and Lois and Jim Haig , and many nieces and nephews and other relatives. Proceeding her in death were her parents, brothers Ronald Wiebe, infant brother Joseph Wiebe, Wilbert Wiebe; sisters Rowena Barnard, Joceline Corraini, and Coreen Schartner, and several in-laws.
Also of special mention are 3 of her close friends, Nancy Barkman, Ionne Dueck, and Joyce Boese.
We would also like to give a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Ridgevalley Seniors Home for the loving care they gave to Mom in her last years. It is greatly appreciated by the family.
