Catherine “Kitty” Chesney (nee Danylko) passed away peacefully on Monday, November 22, 2021 at the Pasqua Hospital, Regina, Saskatchewan at the age of 90.
Kitty was born on April 14, 1931 to Annie and Metro Danylko. She was the third of seven daughters. She completed her Grade 8 and then went to work as a waitress in Yorkton, Saskatchewan and Regina. She loved to dance and was a great jive partner. Kitty and her sisters enjoyed jiving at the local dances and weddings. She met Robert “Bobby” Chesney and they were married on March 14, 1955. They settled on the Chesney family farm in the Hilltop District, Saskatchewan.
Kitty loved the spring and summer seasons where she could be outside and barefoot. She was a very hard worker and always had a huge garden, beautiful flowers and kept a very nice farmyard. She enjoyed canning, baking bread and buns, making butter and cottage cheese, cutting the grass and raising chickens, ducks and geese. She taught herself to sew, quilt, crochet and do various other crafts. Kitty also liked to play bingo. After getting her driver’s license in her 50’s, she would go to Yorkton to play bingo and more recently enjoyed playing TV bingo. Later in life when she had to slow down, she loved doing jigsaw puzzles. Kitty became a whiz and completed 1000 piece puzzles in very short periods of time. Her hands were always busy and these pastimes kept her spry. She also loved watching CFL football and curling on television. Her favorite team was the Calgary Stampeders, mostly because it gave her a chance to root against her family and friends who are mostly Saskatchewan Roughrider fans.
Kitty moved to Regina in the late 1990’s to be closer to some of her sisters as well as her daughter and her daughter’s family. This was quite the lifestyle change for her but she adapted by frequenting the farmers’ market, taking the bus to bingo and making new friends in her seniors complex. She enjoyed visiting with people. A pot of coffee was always on and there was never a shortage of homemade treats. She was a true Ukrainian Baba showing her love and affection by ensuring her visitors never left hungry!
Kitty was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother always putting others ahead of herself. She enjoyed when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren came to visit or phoned her to see how she was doing. She always wanted to hear about the things they were involved in and usually had a good story to tell too.
Kitty leaves behind to celebrate her memory her daughter Kendra (Elemer Jerkovits) and their children Travis and Trystal (Jake McGeough); her son Lane (Vicky Peter) and their children Kirsten (Brandon Chomyshen), Kylie (Kevin Kachur), Kole (Lisa Babington), Kris (Sam Sadler) Lukiwski and Kyle Lukiwski; as well her three great-grandchildren Gracyn Chomyshen, Danica Kachur and Declan Kachur. She is survived by her sister Gloria Powell and brother-in-law Earl Chesney (Elsie Lueck); her friend and caregiver Christina (Chrissy) Neault; and many nieces and nephews.
Kitty was predeceased by her parents; her husband Bobby; her sisters Mary, Nancy, Phyllis, Josephine and Emily; as well as many other family members and friends.
The family would like to extend a grateful thank you to the staff at the Pasqua Hospital Unit 4D in Regina who helped her to be as comfortable as possible in her last days. As per Mom’s request, there will not be a funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Kitty by mailing a cheque payable to the Waldron Cemetery Fund, c/o Sherry Ludwar, Box 7, Waldron, Saskatchewan, S0A 4K0 or to a charity of personal choice.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Catherine Kitty Chesney nee Danylko November 22nd 2021..
