BARRIE, Frederick Malcolm – Fred was born May 5th, 1932 in Perth, Ontario to Malcolm and Mossie (nee: Creighton) Barrie. He received his schooling in Perth and his post-secondary education at Ryerson College in Toronto. He began his broadcasting career in radio, in Nassau, Bahamas in 1955 and not long after joined the recently opened CHEX Television station in Peterborough.
Fred began taking piano lessons at the age of 3 and after becoming an accomplished pianist, his extraordinary talent was enjoyed for years in numerous restaurants, clubs and venues throughout Peterborough.
During his many yeas with CHEX Television, he produced a number of interview programs such as the weekly Doug Hall show and Summer Scene in which interviews were shot live, often, in suitable weather, outside the original site of CHEX on Television Hill in Douro Township, overlooking the Trent Canal System and the Peterborough Golf and Country Club. He created and produced Campus Quiz, which saw grade eight students from various schools throughout the CHEX viewing area compete against students from other area schools. Silver Basketball was another of his creations, as was Dance Party in the earlier years of his time at CHEX TV. He also, from its beginning, and until his retirement, produced the annual Easter Seals Telethon for children.
Though at times he could seem gruff, he will be remembered fondly by his friends for his wry sense of humour, his hearty laugh and the various kindnesses bestowed when he saw someone in need of assistance, kindnesses that were never spoken of, or even admitted to, by him.
At Fred’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
