Obituary of Alan Camille Schuster
Al Schuster, beloved husband of June passed away peacefully on November 15, 2021 at the age of 89. He will be dearly missed by his children, Brenda (Rob Beug) and Don (Lana Dauk) and their children Jan (Maud Warner), Matthew (Natalie Gibson) Joseph, Cameron and his great grandchildren Freddie and Murray. He was predeceased by June, his loving wife of 62 years, his parents Joseph and Mary Schuster and sister Iona Meyer. He is survived by his sisters Enid Kyle, Adele Graff as well as many nieces, nephews.
Al was born in Dysart, Saskatchewan in 1932 where he received his high school education and 1956 he completed his Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from the University of Saskatchewan. His career in the provincial government included senior positions in the Water Resource Department and the Saskatchewan Water Corporation.
As a youth he was active in hockey, baseball and curling. Upon retirement he took a keen interest in cycling and running, and for 23 years competed in road races and marathons in both Canada and United States. He was recognized as a top Canadian runner in various age categories, his career highlight was 3rd place at the Boston Marathon at the age of 73! In later years he concentrated on daily exercise and cycling.
He was a man of many skills and was always available to help friends and family on home renovation projects. He volunteered at Habitat for Humanity building houses and working at their « ReStore » building material center with his good friend Joe Dauk.
He had happy memories of water skiing at Pasqua Lake, snowmobiling on the prairies, ski holidays, cycling, running road trips and warm winter vacations, always with friends and family.
He lived a life of helping, inspiring and mentoring all to action, always with his positive attitude and energy. He was resilient to the end, struggling briefly with illness. Thank you to Dr Schussler, 3E Nursing staff and the Infectious Disease Team.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 21st, 1:30 p.m. at the Hotel Saskatchewan, Regency Dining Room, 2125 Victoria Avenue, Regina. Proof of COVID vaccination and masks will be required. In keeping with his commitment to health Al asks donations be made to the Saskatchewan-Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
