Obituary
John passed peacefully in his easy chair in the simple comfort of his own home.
Born in rural Manitoba, John grew up loving fishing, camping and hunting. He moved to Winnipeg as a young man and met his wife Emma. They were married for 49 years until Emma’s passing in 2010. John is survived by his two children, Dawn (Glenn) Lysholt and Kevin (Paula) Nielsen. John will be remembered by his brother Merv (Alain) and sisters Eleanor (Gerald), Gladys, Nancy (Corky); brother-in-law Will, sister in law Georgina, many nieces and nephews and many friends including his good friends Angie, Alice and Renee.
John started his career in retail in a small town in Spearhill, MB at the General Store. From there he worked at Ashdown’s in Winnipeg before moving to Kamloops BC in 1966 to raise a family. Many people may remember John from the days when Woodward’s came to Penticton in 1976. He could often be found around the sporting goods area or setting up ‘dollar 49 day’ sales.
He also enjoyed camping and being in the outdoors, which is something he has passed down to us. One of our favourite family stories is the time when we were camping and a whole herd of cattle were being moved through to another pasture on the other side of the lake…Dad slept through the whole thing!
John was known to strike up a conversation with just about anybody and made many friends over the years. He could remember faces however names were his nemesis. He never passed up a good deal and as kids we would often joke about how many bananas came home with him – to which he would retort “they were on sale!”.
He will be remembered for his good humor and patience, love of travel and always available for a good game of cards.
