It is with great sadness that we announce the recent passing of Mr. Seamus Monaghan at the Red Deer Hospice, Red Deer, Alberta on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at the age of 85 years. Seamus was born on December 15, 1935 in Poyntzpass, Ireland, the eleventh child of fourteen children born to Elizabeth and Joseph Monaghan. Seamus grew up in Acton; he enjoyed sports and excelled in Gaelic Football and Track and Field. In 1956, Seamus moved to Canada to join some of his older siblings in Edmonton, Alberta. His work took him to Norman Wells, NWT where he met his soul mate and love of his life, Patricia Waterstreet, who was nursing there. They moved to Olds, Pincher Creek and then Lethbridge; where they resided for thirty-five years and where their children grew up. While in Lethbridge, Seamus worked at Lethbridge Industries, which was a machine shop that he owned with his brothers, Eiver and Patrick. Seamus was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and all the parishes they were a part of. Seamus became a member of the Picture Butte Golf Course; where he enjoyed many golf games with a regular group of gentlemen who also enjoyed the 19th hole discussions and celebrations. Many family gatherings were enjoyed with extended family and friends, particularly in Waterton and Park Lake. Besides his incredible love for his family here, Seamus had a special place in his heart for his family over in Ireland. He was very fortunate to make many trips back, where he was welcomed with open arms by his nieces and nephews. Faith was a huge part of his life, Sunday Mass and the Rosary were very important to Seamus; and when he had the opportunity, he would fit in the Daily Mass, no matter where he was. In 2005, Seamus and Patricia moved to Red Deer, where they were able to be closer to some of their grandkids. Seamus also continued his passion for golf with Patricia by his side. Seamus will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Patricia; his children, Brian (Viviana) of Vernon, British Columbia; Terry (Tracy) of Edmonton, Alberta; and Siobhan (Tom) Bast of Red Deer, Alberta; his eight grandchildren, Megan, Bethany, Keira, Cèili, Siobel, Gabe, Mairead and Luke. He will also be sadly missed by his brothers, Joseph and Sean (Sheila) of Ireland and his sister, Siona of Edmonton, Alberta; as well as numerous family members and dear friends. Seamus was predeceased by a son, Kevin; his brothers, Francis, Raymond, Eiver and Patrick; and his sisters, Philomena, Mary, Anne, Teresa, and Una. A Prayer Service will be held at Parkland Funeral Home, Red Deer, Alberta. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Red Deer, Alberta.
