Obituary
Thomas Philip Peddie
1947 – 2021
It is with great sadness that the family of Phil Peddie announce his recent passing. Although he loved handing out candy to ‘trick or treaters’, the dread of receiving yet another Orange Pumpkin-shaped birthday cake was greater. Either that, or God needed him more than we did. Although managing Diabetes, Heart disease and kidney failure for years it was none of these things that took Dad at the end. His specialist and Doctor exclaimed that the was ‘A tough old Bugger’ and was likely to make it through his last illness, however, that darn in-grown toenail put bacteria in his blood and the sepsis took him quickly and painlessly. Dad passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital where he was lucky enough to not have to stay long and eat the food. A believer, he left the earth to go to be with The Lord, surrounded by his children and with his puppy-dog Percy sleeping on his lap.
Born Thomas Philip Peddie on Halloween (October 31) 1947 in Vancouver, British Columbia, He was known throughout his life to most people as Phil. To others, he was Uncle, Friend, Brother or to us, Dad. Phil was a proud member of the Squamish Nation (North Vancouver), Leslieville Antique Club, Bethel Union Church, and Crimestoppers. Phil lived in Egmont BC, followed by Powell River BC and finally settled in Alberta where he met his Wife Carol and lived around the Leslieville area until his death on Monday October 25, 2021.
Phil excelled at giving the finger, taking no S***, telling stories and being tough as nails. He did not excel at hiding his disdain, showing patience while on hold or using his most recent purchase, an iPhone. Dad hated bananas, Magpies/Bluejays eating the ‘Good Birds’ food, and following the speed limit. He loved Lobster and seafood (other than salmon), hunting/fishing, playing cards and BS’ing with his many friends. Phil was constantly on the phone connecting with those that had touched his life in some way. He was better than most at playing crib and canasta, spotting Deer/Moose, or finding a secret spot on the water where the fish would be biting.
Phil had a colourful collection of many stories from his life and an uncanny ability to tell them with humour, emotion and with so much detail that the listener could be transported and feel like they experienced it too. Dad travelled throughout Alberta, British Columbia, Alaska (one of his favs!), Chile, USA, Germany, UK, Iran, Iceland, and perhaps sneaked into other places but forgot to tell his children.
Phil didn’t take fashion cues from anyone. His signature look was all his own. Typically seen wearing bluejeans, a button up shirt with a couple pens in the left breast pocket, a pocketknife on him, flashy rings on his fingers and his faithful puppy dog by his side. Early on he would also be seen wearing a ball cap until his wife Carol tactfully sold most of them at her annual yard sale.
Phil was very shortly married to Kathleen (nee Chamberlain) in BC in the early 1970’s, which produced one beautiful daughter, Kamala (Kam) Gray (nee Peddie) who resides in England. Not one to enjoy failure, Phil gave it another shot and married Carol (Phillips) in 1976. It’s a good thing he tried a second time, as Carol was the love of his life and remained with Phil until her death in 2014. They had two children together, Ryan and Amy, and blessed them with a dry sense of humour and a good work ethic (mostly because they were born in the day when Child Labour was still widely accepted).
Predeceased by his parents, Tom and Rose (Silvey), wife Carol, younger brother Jock, and his three children Kamela Gray (Marcus), Ryan Peddie (Genny), and Amy Peddie-Payne (Martin) who loved him very much. He was a proud grandfather to Josh and Lara (Gray), along with Malcolm Wesley and Keziah (Peddie).
