Leona’s Obituary
Leona was born January 14,1929 to Wasyl and Kate (Hawryluk) Mykytiw in the district of Primula (AB). She was the youngest with 6 older brothers.
November 22, 1946, she married Stanley Sawak and they resided on the family farm in Heinsburg (AB). The call “go north young man go north” was too enticing to resist, in the fall of 1949 along with brother Jim and his family they headed north to the beautiful Peace River Country settling on a farm in Worsley (AB). In 1953, they moved to Fairview (AB) where they raised their growing family and resided ever since.
Leona was blessed with four wonderful children, Stella in 1948, Gail in 1949, Dianne in 1950 and Garry in 1954. Leona was a stay at home Mom and enjoyed raising her family, cooking, canning, gardening, cake decorating, floral arranging, crocheting and sewing. She made most of the families clothing. She also drew blueprints for 4 houses that she helped Stan build and renovated 3. At “84” years young she took up painting, did 64 pictures for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends. This beachy background she hand painted.
Leona and Stan were well known for their hospitality, many people came through their doors. They stayed in contact with many of them. The family enjoyed many outings, camping and fishing, Winagami and Ole Lake were favourite sites.
Leona worked as a Janitor at FHS, Telephone Operator, at a Bakery and 15 years at the Post Office. Leona was convinced she’d found the truth about what the Bible teaches and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses at the age of 13. Along with Stan she was privileged to work on many Quick Build Kingdom Halls across AB, SK, BC, Yukon and Hawaii. They travelled to 5 continents and spent 12 winters in Hawaii. She treasured her faith and looks forward to the promise in Rev 21:3,4 to live in a peaceful new world free from sorrow and death. “It’s Just Around the Corner”.
Leona is predeceased by her loving husband Stanley, parents, in-laws Joe and Kateryna Sawak, Brothers, Walter (Mary)Mykytiw, Nick (Nancy)Mykytiw, James (Anne)Mykytiw, Paul (Audrey)Mykytiw, Peter Mykytiw (Paul’s twin as infant) Ted Mykytiw as infant in Ukraine.
