Alan Edward Gough
April 15, 1942 – September 25, 2021
I passed away peacefully in the arms of my girls. I didn’t want to go, but we knew it was time; I fought because I didn’t want to leave them. I was 79 years old and, as I have told my wife and daughters repeatedly, I had a good life. The best; filled with buckets of love and laughter. I was born in the front bedroom of my parent’s house in Foxboro and was a whopping 5lbs at birth. I was lucky to be the fifth child, and third son, to Oakley and Daisy Gough. Shortly after I was born my sister, and best friend, Jean was born. I was the last of my family to say goodbye; I was predeceased by my Parents, sister Shirley Wilson (John), brother Douglas Gough (Joyce), brother Arthur Gough, sister Doris Phillips (Russ), and sister Jean Day (Jim). I met the woman of my dreams on a blind date in March 1964, fell instantly in love, and we married on July 17, 1965. My daughters were born in 1969 and 1971. On repeat, they have told me that “I was the best dad ever”. With a heavy heart I say goodbye to my wife Beverly Jean (Kilpatrick), and my daughters Lisa Murphy (Tim) and Jennifer Gough-Irvine (David). I rest peacefully knowing that my girls are loved by my amazing son-in-laws who I was honoured to know and love. My daughters gave me four grandchildren in four years… and I fell absolutely in love with all of them. It was not unusual for my daughters to come home from a night out when I was babysitting to find me covered in smiles, and stickers! My grandkids kept me young, and filled my heart with joy. I say a sad farewell to Noah Murphy, Zakary Irvine, Katie Murphy, and Ethan Irvine… “Don’t cry because I’m gone, smile because Papa loved you.” I also say goodbye to my fourth, yet unofficial, sister Joyce, and my niece and nephew who I have loved like my own children: Sheri and Stephen Gough. The three of you are responsible for many of my wrinkles! To my nephew, David Phillips: you were one of my best friends and a source of constant love and ridiculous fun… I will miss you. I guess you could say that, after 43 years at DuPont and years of dedicated service as a volunteer firefighter, I have made many friends to whom I want to say thank you. You are great people and I have treasured our time together. My girls need to celebrate my life and would be honoured if you would join them for a Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 23 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at St. Andrew’s by the Lake Church, 1 Redden St., Kingston. They are hoping you will “Wear Plaid for Dad”… as with everything else, goofy Covid-19 protocol will be in place, limiting the number of people in the church at one time. A private burial will take place at a later date in Foxboro Cemetery… I’ll be resting beside my big brother Doug if you ever want to visit. Finally, and certainly not from lack of thought, my wife, daughters, and myself would like to send love and thanks to the staff at Providence Manor, Montreal 5. We all felt respected and loved within the walls of that floor… and the people who work there were my extended family for almost two years. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. As I say my final so-long, please remember that you will find me in the woods, near the water, and in the smiles of my grandchildren. For now, I’ll be playing a vicious game of Donkey with my family. Donations if desired to Kingston Humane Society or Providence Manor.
