Stanley A. « Sam » Milne
1928-2020
Born in Kentville, NS, on May 9, 1928, he was the 4th of 10
children born to the late L.S. « Laurie » and Ruth (Green)
Milne. He is survived by his beloved children, Judith
« Judy », at home; Marilyn « Mimi » (Marty) Dodge, New
Minas and their three children, Megan (Rob) Puttock, Milton, ON and
son Harry; Matthew « Matt » Dodge, New Minas and daughter,
Taylor; and Melissa « Missy » Dodge, New Minas; Faye (Terry)
Swanburg, Cambridge, ON, and their two sons, Anthony » Tony »
(Danielle Sorbara), Cambridge, ON and Andrew « Andy » (Kathryn
Armstrong), Burlington, ON and his children, Carter and Mya; Doug
(Sharon Ewing) Milne, Canada Creek and their son, Reilly, Moncton,
NB. Sam is also survived by step-mother, Pauline
(Desborough) Milne, Wolfville; sisters, Ina (late Norman)
Palmer, Berwick; Dorothy « Dottie » (late Kenneth) Barron,
Wolfville; Carol Ann (late Doug) Anthony, New Minas; brother Donald
« Donnie » (Jean) Milne, Granville Centre;
brother-in-law, Jim (Dot) Hancock, Wolfville; and special friend,
Audrey Ginley, Berwick; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and
extended family members. Sam was predeceased by the love of his life,
wife Ruby (Hancock); in-laws, Robert and Evelyn (Leary)
Hancock; brothers, Ronald; Calvin « Cal » (Dot); Lawrence
« Lonnie » (Ann); Gerald « Gerry » (Phyllis, Pauline);
sister, Shirley (Lorne) Fraser; sister-in-law, Doris (Hancock) Holland
(Ed Allain, Shelburne, ON); nieces, Tanya Milne, Mary (Grimm) Butler,
Leslie Ann (Barron) Conrad; nephews, Brian Milne and Wayne Milne. Sam
lived a full life with his family foremost in his heart and dedication
to friends and community. In the 1950’s he managed
Milne’s Garage in Annapolis Royal. He was a founding member
of the Lions Club, was a member of the fire department for 8 years and
enjoyed participating in Natal Day festivities especially the water
sports. The family returned to New Minas in 1959.
Sam worked in the family business, Milne’s Garage, until he
retired in 2000 after 62 years when the business sold. He wore many
hats including Sales Manager, General Manager, Vice President, Dealer
Principal and became President when his father passed. This time also
included being an Insurance Agent for the New Minas Insurance Agency.
He was humbled to receive the TIME Magazine Quality Dealer Award, for
Nova Scotia, as did his father before him. He enjoyed the association
with FORD MOTOR COMPANY. He was an original member the New Minas
Volunteer Fire Department, was a Deputy Chief, Captain of the Rescue
Unit and a member of the Auxiliary. He was in the fire
service for over 55 years until his time of passing. A former member
of the United Church of St. Paul & St. Stephen, a scout master
of 4th Kentville B Troop for 16 years and earned the Gilwell Scout
Wood Badge. He volunteered with the Apple Blossom Festival Committee
for over 30 years, mainly with Transportation. He was deeply
honoured to receive a Paul Harris Fellowship from the New Minas Rotary
Club in recognition of his community service. Sam and Ruby helped
establish the High Tide Drifters camping club and became Provincial
Field Directors for 22 years with NCHA, now Family Campers and RVers.
The family wishes to thank Jim, Brenda and Mark Redmond for their
friendship with Dad. A graveside celebration of
Sam’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September
25, 2021 in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. COVID
pandemic restrictions in place and for those that wish to sit, please
bring your own chair and dress for the weather. Donations in memory
can be made to New Minas Volunteer Fire Department, Chrysalis House or
charity of choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the
