Obituary of Rev. Roy Douglas King
Roy Douglas, the first of eight children, was born to Victor and Amelia Ellen (Walker) King in Bishop’s Falls, Newfoundland on April 5, 1928. After fully committing their lives to God in 1949, he and his sweetheart, Maxine Melba Joyce Goobie, travelled to Ontario to attend Eastern Pentecostal Bible College (EPBC, now known as Masters College and Seminary). They were happily married in August 1950, and for 50 years worked together as a ministry team, until her death in November 2000.
These years of formal ministry included Pentecostal Assemblies of Newfoundland and Labrador (PAONL) pastor in Hant’s Harbour, Trinity Bay (1952-1954), General Treasurer of PAONL (1954-1980) during which time he was also elected to other positions that he held simultaneously—Youth and Sunday School Director (1956-1968), General Secretary (1962-1978), and Assistant Superintendent (1978-1980). In 1980 he was elected as General Superintendent of the PAONL and served in this position for sixteen years. He was a member of various boards, such as the Board of Governors of EPBC (34 years), the Overseas Missions Board of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, the Newfoundland and Labrador Board of School Trustees, and the PAONL Board of Education. His vision, passion, attention to detail, calm reflective responses and encouragement of others have always been remarkable characteristics throughout his life.
His ministry did not end with his official retirement as General Superintendent of the PAONL in 1996. He continued to serve faithfully wherever the door of opportunity opened: a life of encouragement and equipping involving what he considered to be his practical duties — anything from cooking meals, baking Christmas fruitcakes, entertaining groups of 6-8 people, and visiting all those he felt needed his attention whether connected to the church or not, and those things he viewed as his ministerial responsibilities — preparing and leading Bible studies, participating in regular early morning prayer meetings, and preaching opportunities. In fact as recent as his 91st year he was preparing handouts and teaching the Adult Sunday school class each week at the Windsor Pentecostal Church.
Roy D. King always cared for, supported and encouraged his family. He is survived by his well-loved daughter Donna (Ewen) Butler and doted-upon grandsons Andre (fiancée Twila Barnes) and Jonathan (Devan); brothers Robert (Juanita) and Glenn (Karen); sisters June (Dave) Budgell-Jenkins, Betty (Earl) Lambert and Madeline Giles; brother-in-law David Doman and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Maxine, parents Victor and Ellen, brother Tom and wife Ivy, sister Marie Doman, and brothers-in-law Howard Giles and Hedley Budgell.
