Fleming, Matthew Shawn – age 59, of Wedgeport, N.S. and formerly Orangeville, Ontario, passed away at Yarmouth Regional Hospital on September 3, 2021. Born in Greenfield, Massachusetts, USA, on September 15, 1961, he was the son of John and Marianne (Smith) Fleming. Matthew was known to be an extremely creative, enigmatic and kind individual who was always able to see beauty in everything and everyone. A multi-talented musician, Matthew worked with many amazing musicians, artists and dance groups in his early career. In the early 80s Matthew composed music for Ottawa-based dance company, Le Groupe de la Place Royale. Later, he composed music for many plays in collaboration with choreographer Bill James, before moving to Toronto in 1987 where he focused on his percussion talents and provided musical accompaniment to various collaborative and personal performances.
He spent most of his later life, 25 years, in Orangeville, Ontario, where he attended Westminster United Church and developed many strong friendships. Throughout the years, Matthew actively participated in Orangeville’s arts and cultural community by working with the T.O.Y.S. Choir, hosting community drum circles, and hosting workshops at local schools. He also performed in many Theatre Orangeville plays and held his own personal concerts, demonstrating his diverse musical and artistic skills. While continuously participating in various musical projects, Matthew always made the time to help out his close friends, family, and community in any way he could. There is so much more that can be said about Matthew but overall he was a brilliant musician who never gave up on his dreams and always lived life to the fullest. He is survived by his daughter, Caitlyn Fleming, Toronto, Ontario; best friend, Julie Mae Nemeth, Bear River, Nova Scotia; sisters, Kellianne (Lee) Land, Wedgeport; and Sabrina (Mark) Mandell, Washington DC, USA. Predeceased by his cherished cat Jasper. Cremation has taken place under the care of Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. As per Matthew’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Interment will take place at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to sweenys@sweenysfuneralhome.net, or you may sign the guestbook at www.sweenysfuneralhome.net.
